Office/Unit/Project Description

The Japan Unit sits under the Bureau for External Relations and Advocacy at the headquarters of UNDP. The Unit is committed to strengthening partnerships with Japan (the public and private sectors and civil society organizations in Japan) by playing a coordination and facilitation role within UNDP and between UNDP and Japan. The Japan Unit, with close collaboration with the UNDP Representative Office in Tokyo, undertakes a wide range of activities including support for resource mobilization and management of Japan’s financial contributions to UNDP’s programmes/projects.
The Programme Analyst for Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge will support the Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge, which matches the Japanese private sector with UNDP’s Accelerator Labs to contribute to achieving the SDGs. UNDP now has 91 Labs covering 115 countries, building on locally-sourced solutions, rapid testing and combining the best understanding, ideas and expertise to generate collective knowledge. With the support of the Japanese government, the Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge for UNDP Accelerator Labs is an experimental approach to apply expertise and technologies that the Japanese private sector will create and validate the solution identified by the Accelerator Labs with their technology and expertise.
The Challenge is in its second year, implementing a second cohort of selected Labs. The work of Programme Analyst for Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge will contribute to the smooth facilitation of the project as it requires close contact and regular coordination with relevant teams including the Global Team at the Accelerator Labs, the Japanese government, and the Japanese private sector.

 

Institutional Arrangement:

This Programme Analyst will report to Senior Advisor of Japan Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of Work

As a focal point of Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge in the Japan Unit, the Programme Analyst is expected to;

  • Coordinate with the Japanese private sector, a Japanese CSO which facilitates implementation of the innovation Challenge, the Cabinet office of the Government of Japan, UNDP’s Global Team in New York, and Accelerator Labs to facilitate the implementation of the second cohort of Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge;
  • Closely monitor and provide regular reporting to the donor on the delivery status of the project through a regular communication with the Accelerator Labs and the Country Offices where the Challenge is conducted and manage over all implementation of the Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge together with Senior Advisor of Japan Unit as fund manager;
  • Facilitate the evaluation process of the third cohort of Accelerator Labs if budget is approved;
  • Support preparation and execution of outreach activities
  • Any other tasks related to the work of the Japan Unit with prior consultation with Senior Advisor of Japan Unit

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum Academic Education:

  • Master's degree in International Development or related areas in social sciences or a bachelor's degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience;

Minimum years of relevant Work experience:

  • No relevant work experience is required with a master’s degree;
  • 2 years of relevant work experience with a bachelor’s degree.

Required skills and competencies:

  • Strong computer skills (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Power BI, Teams and SharePoint, Zoom).

Desired additional skills and competencies:

  • Skills and working experience on SDGs, Innovation and SDGs Innovation Challenge with the private sector, and knowledge on UNDP’s Accelerator Lab is desirable.

Required Language(s) (at working level):

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Japanese.
