Background

Autism is a common disorder of childhood and leading cause of cognitive neuro-disability in adult life, affecting 1 in 150 indiviuals and the rates thought to be higher in the Arab region due to an increasing prevelance of genetic heritability. Yet, it remains unrecognized and underdiagnosed; this is directly related to lack of autism health services strategy in the region.
Kuwait Autism centre seeks the professional services of a Consultant in the field of Neurology and Neurogenetics to propose and establish a clinical practice parameters for the screening and diagnosis of autism to be applicable in Kuwait for both service and research purposes.

Objectives:

Establish the specialized Health services strategy and clinical parameters for screening and diagnosis of autism;
Establish a research group mainly concerned with clinical and applied autism research;
Establish autism research priorities and directions to sort out the main problems for autism patients;
Provide Neurology and Neurogenetics special services for relevant candidates and their families;
Provide ongoing training for staff in Kuwait Autism centre.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop specialized Neurology and Neurogenetics health services for autism patients in collaboration with the existing national and regional health institutions;
Establish and lead a scientific research group mainly concerned with early detection, screening and strengthening the diagnostic tools;
Establish the autism centre’s clinical research priorities and directions in relevance with Kuwait community and collaborate with universities and institutes of higher education on courses leading to recognised qualifications in autism spectrum disorders;
Provide Neurology and Neurogenetics consultation services for Autism and relevant Neurogenetic patients and families.

Expected Outputs:

Development of health services guidelines and protocol for Kuwait Autism Centre;
Establishment of a leading research group in Autism and cognitive neurogenetics field in region;
Propose the main the clinical research projects and priorities to maintain the Kuwait Autism centre leading role in collaboration with international and regional centres;
Trianing local Kuwaiti nationals (medical and technical staff) working at Kuwait Autism centre and build up their capacity with relevant postgraduate qualifications;
Establish and provide advanced specialized Neurology and Neurogenetics services.

Competencies

A PhD in the field of speciality (Neurology and Neurogenetics) and long experience in the field of speciality;
The ability to speak English and Arabic fluently;
Past relevant expertise in executing similar project in disability with UNDP;
Past relevant expertise in similar set of services and clinical research in Neurology and Neurogenetics;
Past relevant expertise in administration and organizing and delivering training courses and workshops.

Required Skills and Experience

Medically qualified specialized in Neurology and Neurogenetics;
Master and PhD in the field of speciality (Neurology and Neurogenetics).
