Launched in 2008, the Business Call to Action (BCtA) is a global membership platform that encourages private sector companies to develop innovative business models that combine profitability with development impact, in support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
 
BCtA members are market leaders and innovators, committed to developing commercially-viable business ventures that engage people living at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) as consumers, producers, suppliers, and distributors of goods and services. In more than 20 countries, business leaders are spearheading efforts to provide the poor with the tools and resources they need to succeed by promoting economic opportunity.
 
BCtA provides a leadership platform for companies to demonstrate their commitment to development, and access global expertise on innovation at the BoP. Members benefit from:
  • Recognition as part of a high-visibility leadership platform, including association with the UN brand and possible international speaking engagements   
  • Access to a global knowledge network on inclusive business models and communities of practice

BCtA is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which hosts the BCtA Secretariat, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), and the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF).  

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of Work:

BCtA has ambitious targets to expand the number of member companies from 45 to 150 by the end of 2015. The BCtA Programme Support Consultant  will provide business outreach and program support to the BCtA Secretariat, performing the following services:
  •  In consultation with the Business Outreach Specialist, provide outreach to potential BCtA member companies and conduct market research on various industries and sectors as needed to fulfill new company member quota
  • Identify companies which have an inclusive business initiative and engage with those companies by phone and through email to support companies that meet BCtA membership criteria in submitting and filling out applications for the BCTA membership platform
  • Manage the customer relationship data base and mailing lists of the Secretariat to ensure that these are current
  • Organize and keep records of monthly meetings of the BCtA Project team and Steering Committee
  • Support BCtA's knowledge management functions  by compiling information on implementation of inclusive business member company initiatives for results reporting among other tasks
  • Take initiative and play a support role in developing and organizing BCtA internal and external events that would benefit member company outreach activities of the BCtA
  • Provide administrative support to program activities of the Secretariat as required, in collaboration with the Finance and Administration officer and other relevant team members
  Outputs/ Deliverables/ Reporting Requirements:
  •  Identify at least 100 new companies for the BCtA pipeline (in line with portfolio management approach) and undertake initial outreach efforts, keeping adequate records of all conversations in a Salesforce database
  • Reach out to potential BCtA member companies consistent with a portfolio management approach which targets inclusive business initiatives in health, agriculture, and climate change, among other areas, and sectors such as telecoms, pharma, energy, or based on types of innovation (i.e. value chain efficiency, low-cost product/service)
  • Work with companies engaged in the BCtA approval process to ensure accurate and complete applications which capture full information to meet BCtA membership criteria and shepherd the applications through the process.
  • Support preparation efforts for BCtA events and activities by providing planning and logistical support for proposed panels, webinars and other outreach activities, assist with coordinating efforts between BCtA in NY, funders, member companies and relevant stakeholders,
  • For Rio+20, in particular, engage with Brazilian companies and institution to drive BCtA’s member outreach efforts and contribute significantly to BCtA’s Latin America inclusive business company outreach strategy
  • Provide administrative support to program activities of the Secretariat as required.
     
 The Consultant shall report to the BCtA Secretariat in New York.
 
Payments for work completed shall be made based on deliverables submitted and deemed satisfactory by the BCtA Secretariat, allowing no more than 1 month from submission of final product. There is a possibility of contract extension based on need and satisfactory completion of the above deliverables within the initial 6 month period.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 
  • Minimum Master's degree in Business Administration, International Relations or Economic Development.  
Experience: 
  • Minimum of five years combined experience in the private sector, preferably working with companies in inclusive business or impact investing) and/or in the development sector working on private sector issues.
  • Experience in organizing events and an attention to detail in managing information and databases.
  • Experience in producing high quality written publications and correspondence. 
Language: 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and proficiency in at least one additional UN language
 
Application:   Required Documentation 
  • Proposal: Explaining why they are the most suitable for the work
  • Financial proposal -  the financial proposal will specify the daily fee, which should include all related expenses including related benefits and insurance. All envisaged travel costs must be included in the financial proposal. 
  • P11 or Personal CV and at least 3 references.
In the case of unforeseen travel, payment of travel costs including tickets, lodging and terminal expenses should be agreed upon, between the respective business unit and Individual Consultant, prior to travel and will be reimbursed.
 
EVALUATION:
  • Cumulative analysis: When using this weighted scoring method, the award of the contract should be made to the individual consultant whose offer has been evaluated and determined as: responsive/compliant/acceptable, and  having received the highest score out of a pre-determined set of weighted technical and financial criteria specific to the solicitation.
  • Technical Criteria weight: 70%
  • Criteria A (experience and motivation) 35%
  • Criteria B (understanding of private sector and inclusive business) 35%  
  • Financial Criteria weight: 30%
