Background

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
      
Thematic clusters will bring together specialists supporting the normative and operational aspects of UN Women's mandate. Given UN Women's limited resources in its start-up phase, the initial set of thematic clusters will include: Elimination of Violence against Women; Peace and Security; Economic Empowerment and Governance/Participation/Leadership. The thematic section on Economic Empowerment will include issues such as: economic empowerment, macroeconomic policies, employment, sustainable development and land.

Under the supervision of the Economic Advisor, the incumbent of the post is responsible for undertaking gender analysis and research on priority areas and assuming substantive and administrative aspects of priority themes.

Analysis and Research
  • Participate in the analysis of economic empowerment in selected areas at the global, regional and national levels;
  • Undertake empirical research and analysis of trends and developments and related policy issues, including macroeconomics and public policies, relevant to the unit/departmental mandate, projects and initiatives;
  • Recommend proposals for inclusion in reports to intergovernmental bodies, member states, etc.
  • Develop indicators and methodologies for review and evaluation of specific topics.
  • Draft reports and prepare summaries of meetings, etc.
  • Contribute to the preparation of various written reports, documents and communications, e.g. drafts reports or sections of analytical reports, studies, background papers, fact sheets, technical guidance papers, parliamentary documents, briefings, correspondence, etc.
 Intergovernmental Support
  • Provide support to intergovernmental processes dealing with economic issues.
  • Prepare inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies;
  • Follow intergovernmental meetings and preparing summary reports;
  • Prepare inputs to statements by members of UN Women to such meetings;
  • Assist in the organization of panels, round tables, etc. on social development issues for intergovernmental processes.
Policy and Technical Guidance
  • Assist in the planning, organizing and servicing of technical and ad hoc expert group meeting.
  • Organize training seminars for key stakeholders, including national experts
  • Prepare documentation for global programmes and projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of material for the approval of regional, country or sectoral programmes and projects.
  • Monitor, backstop and assess the implementation of programmes and projects related to women's economic empowerment.
  • Participate in fact-finding and advisory missions to countries and other activities in support of work programme.
Representation
  • Represents the work unit at international and other meetings; organize and participate in working groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners on social and economic development related matters, as well as feminist and progressive economists.
  • Liaise with officials of governments, representatives of national, regional and global organizations, organizations of the UN system, etc. on selected social economic issues related to the implementation of specific programmes, action plans or other initiatives, and provides advice on gender-responsive macroeconomic policies and inclusive growth
Impact of Results:

The key results have a major impact on the overall effectiveness of UN Women's work on economic empowerment, leading to enhanced impact of the Organization on gender issues and the achievement of equality between women and men.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Minimum of Master's degree or equivalent in Economics, or other related disciplines.

Experience:
 
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in policy research and gender analysis at a national or international level Experience with UN highly desirable.

Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in another UN working language is desirable.

 

Note: In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
