Background

The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is seeking an Online Communications Manager.

The mission of HDRO is to promote human development progress and analysis through global forums, publications and other communications initiatives, led by UNDP’s annual Human Development Report. HDRO also supports the production of Human Development Reports at the regional and national level. The multilingual HDRO website (hdr.undp.org) is one of the most widely utilized websites in the multilateral system, and its continuing effectiveness and improvement is essential to the accomplishment of HDRO’s mission. Candidates for this position must have mastery of the requisite website management design and editorial skills, as well as great creative energy, a commitment to innovation and public impact, and a sophisticated understanding of international issues and audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief of Communications and Publishing, the Online Communications Manager will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Ensure continued creative development of HDRO website tools, design and content;
  • Promote the Human Development Report online by means of data & content syndication; cross-linking with related organizations & news websites; and online marketing;
  • Procure services and supervise the work of web-related vendors and consultants;
  • Manage the global online launch of each annual Human Development Report;
  • Prepare web content (editing, formatting, and publishing) for the HDRO website and its affiliate portals (social media sites, partner sites, and intranet sites);
  • Prepare and update interactive statistical web content generated from HDRO’s proprietary statistical data management system;
  • Manage  translations of content into French, Spanish, and other languages as required;
  • Monitor traffic to the HDRO website using UNDP’s corporate web analytics service;
  • Monitor references to  the Human Development Report in online news and social media;
    Advise HDRO management and act as focal point for the development of internet communications tools, materials, multimedia and/or web-based products;
  • Assist HDRO management in designing and implementing knowledge management systems to support knowledge sharing and foster efficient internal workflows;
  • Conduct technical needs assessments related to evolving web technologies (e.g. mobile apps);
  • Draft strategies and proposals for the continued development of the website and its tools;
  • Contribute to capacity building for HDRO staff through training on relevant technologies (web tools, computer software, webcasting and videoconferencing, etc);
  • Ad-hoc duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced university degree, or equivalent relevant experience, in communications, computer sciences, international development, journalism, new media, or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in development and management of dynamic websites;
  • Knowledge of computer systems and their applications is required as well as demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Expertise in web technologies, especially HTML/CSS and Java , JavaScript, ColdFusion, and/or ASP.Net;
    Experience in IT project management and working with virtual teams;
  • Experience in web content management systems (e.g. CQ5, Drupal, SiteManager);
  • Experience in interactive data visualization and data driven web applications;
  • Experience in graphic design, multimedia and interactive content production;
  • Knowledge of web server architecture, as well as database design and management;
  • Knowledge of web standards and user interface design concepts and best practices;
  • Knowledge of mobile applications development;
  • Knowledge of social media and social networking technologies;
  • Knowledge of digital video editing and digital photography;
  • Outstanding copywriting and editing skills, with an ability to produce a high quality content.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is highly desirable.

The HDRO Online Communications Manager must have the specialized technical skills in the following areas:
