I. Organizational Context

UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. Since 1992, UN Women (and its precursor UNIFEM) has been supporting the Government of Indonesia and civil society partners to address national priorities for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The current focus includes promoting laws and policies towards enhancing women’s legal rights and access to justice, supporting gender advocates and community-based initiatives to empower and protect the rights of women migrant workers and supporting research on violence against women, including a household survey of men and the costing of the provision of integrated services for victims.

The UN Women office in Jakarta office consists of an acting country program manager, two national program officers (for the fields of governance and economic security and rights), a senior gender advisor to the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection and two program assistants. There is also a national program officer for violence against women based in Jayapura, Papua. The UN Volunteer will work under the direction of the acting county program manager and in close cooperation with the national program officers.

II. Functions / Key Results Expected

Summary of key functions:

  • Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection and the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) are strengthened in their capacity to develop and implement strategies, based on best practice and research, to respond to violence against women, with a focus on prevention.
  • UN Women’s civil society partners working in the field of violence against women are encouraged and supported in their efforts to engage with volunteers.
  • UN agencies have a system in place to coordinate work on violence against women.
  • Reporting on UN Women projects, communications including material for website and newsletter.
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.
II. Impact of Results

The key results have an impact on the success of country programme within specific areas of cooperation. In particular, the key results have an impact on the design, operation and programming of activities, creation of strategic partnerships as well as reaching resource mobilization targets.

Level 1.2: Preparing information for advocacy

  • Provide technical assistance and support to the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection and the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) in designing best practice policies, programs and initiatives on violence against women at the national and sub-national levels, with a focus on prevention
Results-Based Programme Development and Management

Level 1.2: Contributes into results through primary research and analysis

  • Monitor and provide technical assistance to the organisation implementing a Partners for Prevention (P4) survey of men regarding violence against women in the context of gender, masculinites and power. Facilitate consultation meetings for relevant stakeholders, particularly to make plans for research dissemination, advocacy and communications.
Building Strategic Partnerships

  • Collaborate with other UN agencies and donors to ensure work on violence against women is well-coordinated.
  • Support civil society organisations working in the field of violence against women in their efforts to involve volunteers, and participate in their volunteering activities.

 Resource Mobilization (Field Duty Stations)

Level 1.2:  Providing inputs to resource mobilization strategies
  • Monitor and evaluate UN Women’s partners’ work including trust fund grantees.

  • Assist in reporting and other communications on VAW for UN Women Indonesia, including writing material for the UN in Indonesia website and newsletter.

IV. Recruitment Qualifications

Education:

  • Tertiary qualification in gender and development studies, social sciences, public health or related field
Experience: 
  • Minimum three years of experience in the field of gender and violence against women
  • Strong understanding of gender and development as well as best practice in preventing and responding to violence against women
  • Ability to work as a team member; a good listener; well-organised; pays attention to details and meets deadlines
  • Prior volunteer experience and commitment to volunteerism
Language Requirements: 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Indonesian
