Background


The Regional Centre in Cairo (RCC) provides policy advice and technical support to all of UNDP’s Country Offices in the Arab region. The Gender Equality Practice, located within RCC, works to implement gender equality and women’s empowerment as a core objective of UNDP’s operations through mainstreaming gender perspectives into all RCC practices and through dedicated interventions that empower women and promote gender equality. This internship will support the work of the Gender Equality Practice.

Duties and Responsibilities

To support the work of the Gender Practice in this area, an intern is being sought to undertake the following tasks:


• Support the Gender Practice in undertaking research  and writing documents on gender related issues in the Arab region, UNDP Country Offices and RCC practices
• Assist the Gender Practice in the preparation of the meeting of the Gender Community of Practice.
• Support the Gender Practice with preparations and the organization of high profile events
• Assist the Gender Practice in preparation of gender knowledge products.
• Undertake research in support of the Gender Practice priorities. This may include – gender issues in Arab Spring Countries.
• Assist in developing RCC gender service space, including gathering and uploading resources into UNDP’s extranet platform - Teamworks.
• Assist with other functions of the Gender Practice as needed.
Timeframe and arrangements
The intern will be engaged full or part-time from May to September 2012 for 6 months. As per UNDP regulations, the intern will not receive any monetary compensation for her/his work with UNDP. The intern will work from RCC’s office in Cairo. Day to day supervision of the intern will be undertaken by the Gender Policy Specialist of the RCC.

Required Skills and Experience

• Student enrolled in Masters programme/study in Gender Studies, Development, Social Studies,  Political Sciences or any other related a field, or in completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university and is at the completion of a degree on the aforementioned disciplines.
• Computer literate in standard software applications (MS Word, Excel, etc)
• Fluency in spoken and written English. Fluency in Arabic is highly desirable. Knowledge of French is an asset.
