Background

The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) is the United Nations organization that contributes to peace and development by working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers throughout the world.
 
UNV is administered by and aligned with the strategic goals of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Every year, more than 7,500 UN Volunteers, representing some 165 different nationalities, are active participants in the programmes of the United Nations itself and almost all United Nations Funds, Programmes and Specialized Agencies in more than 130 countries.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

The major responsibilities of the position include:
  • Provides the vision and leadership for the development, articulation, and implementation of the substantive and operational aspects of the UNV programme.
  • Represents UNV internationally, and within the UN system.
  • Leads the organizational outreach and resource mobilization activities at the highest levels;
  • Provides strategic oversight and direction to the production of signature knowledge products, most notably the publication of the State of the World’s Volunteerism Report. Provides leadership to a diverse, multi-cultural and competent staff group of approximately 150 at headquarters and more than 7,500 UNV volunteers in the field.
  • Oversees the management of operations and resource management of UNV.
Reporting

UNV is an autonomous entity within UNDP. Highest-level guidance is provided by the UNDP Executive Board, which serves simultaneously as UNV’s Executive Board, and by the UNDP Administrator, who serves simultaneously as UNV’s Managing Director. Day-to-day responsibility for UNV’s strategic direction and organizational leadership is delegated to the Executive Coordinator, who works closely with the UNDP Associate Administrator.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in a relevant social, political, economic or applied scientific and/or business administration or management field.

Experience:

  • A  minimum of 15 years substantive experience that combines programme management, policy engagement and practice including in the area of civic engagement, financial and people management and a demonstrated ability to deliver organizational results on time and within available resources.
  • Extensive development and operational management experience both at the field level across the developing world and at a corporate level within an international public organization. 
    In-depth knowledge of the policy and technical aspects of sustainable development as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by global and national politics, economic structures and civil society processes. 
  • Able to articulate a compelling vision for the role of volunteers and volunteerism in peace and development and to convey this vision in an inspiring manner. 

Language:

  • Fluency in/excellent command of English and good working knowledge of at least one between either French or Spanish. 
  • Knowledge of other UN languages and German would be an asset
