Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global anti-poverty network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 177 countries and territories, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges.
 
The Office of Communications at UNDP is at the forefront of advancing communications and media outreach within the organization, and is seeking a graduate student with an interest in global issues and communications to work on these issues with the Press Secretary and Communications Advisor to the Administrator of UNDP.  This post will give you the opportunity to assist in developing communications campaigns, media strategies, social media projects, and many other creative endeavors, that raise awareness for and engage people in UNDP’s efforts globally to eradicate extreme poverty.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Press Secretary and Communications Advisor on day-to-day communications and media activities involving the Administrator and Associate Administrator of UNDP.
  • Assist with the promotion of UNDP senior management on social media, and conceive new tools for recruiting and engaging supporters.
  • Track, archive, and report on communications products involving the Administrator and Associate Administrator, including photos, videos, press releases, and other content.
  • Complete various administrative tasks related to communications activities.

Competencies

  • An understanding of social media trends, techniques, and information architecture.
  • Some media relations or communications experience, particularly in social media
  • An interest in how communications campaigns can change behavior.
  • Creative, out-of-the-box thinking.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Experience editing images or preparing graphics for the web and email communications a plus.
  • Experience with multimedia a plus.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolment in a graduate degree programme in a development or communications-related field, such as journalism, interactive telecommunications, international relations, political science, anthropology, sociology, public or business administration.

Language:

  • Fluency in English-- written and spoken-- is required. Proficiency in French or Spanish is an asset.

Availability:

  • Must be available at least three days per week, but preferably full-time
