Background

UNDSS Somalia supports the UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes in country through security advice and guidance which enables programmatic work to be conducted in the safest manner possible. Accordingly, the UNDSS – Somalia Training Section conducts a series of courses designed to mitigate the risks faced by UN staff members in country. These courses include:

  • The Safe and Secure Approach to Field Environment (SSAFE) course – mandatory pre-deployment training for UN staff members working in Somalia 
  • The Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB) qualification course 
  • Local Security Assistant’s (LSA) Training
  • Advanced Field Communications and Navigation course 

Under the guidance and supervision of the FSCO Training, the Senior Security Training Associate will act as the deputy to the head of the UNDSS – Somalia Training Unit. In the absence of the FSCO, the Training Associate acts as head of unit and lead instructor on the SSAFE course. The Training Associate provides instructional and operational support for all other UNDSS – Somalia training modules. The incumbent will ensure effective logistical and administrative support to UNDSS – Somalia training activities. The Training Associate promotes a client, quality and results-oriented approach.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of key functions:
  • Acts as lead instructor on UNDSS – Somalia SSAFE course.
  • Provides instructional support for all other training modules. 
  • Assist in the design, implementation and administration of UNDSS – Somalia Security Training Programmes. 
  • Oversees and provides advice, guidance and training to junior staff. 
  • Provides support to knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the CO

Acts as lead instructor on the UNDSS – Somalia SSAFE course, focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Conducts theoretical (classroom based) sessions on hostage survival, communications (VHF, HF and             satellite), convoy procedures and first aid with groups of up to 40 participants.   
  • Conducts practical first aid training sessions for small groups (8 – 10 participants). 
  • Conducts practical communications training sessions (VHF, HF and satellite phone) for small groups of (8 – 10 participants).
  • Conducts ambush, community awareness and civil/military scenario based training for small groups (8 – 10      participants). 

Provides instructional support for all other UNDSS – Somalia training modules, focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Conducts theoretical (classroom based) sessions in the ETB, LSA and advanced field communications and navigation courses. 
  • Conducts practical sessions in the ETB and advanced field communications & navigations courses. 

Assist in the design, implementation and administration of UNDSS – Somalia Security Training Programmes, focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Organize, maintain and revise security training modules
  • In conjunction with the other members of the training team organize schedules, logistics and administrative requirements for courses. 
  • Produce security training schedules. 
  • Monitor implementation of training strategies, proposing solutions and making recommendations to streamline administrations. 
  • Assist in the conduct of security training needs assessments. 
  • Organizes and maintains security training databases. 
  • Review and analyzes feedback/recommendations from participants to improve the effectiveness of security training programmes. 
Oversees and provides advice, guidance and training to junior staff and participants on courses, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Resolves conflicts which may arise between participants or facilitators. 
  • Empowers junior staff to take on increased training responsibilities, providing guidance and constructive feedback when necessary. 

Provides support to knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the CO, focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Participation in the training for the operations/projects staff on administration.
  • Contributes to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

Impact of Results

The duties performed by the Training Associate will have a direct impact on the security and safety of UN staff operating in the field. The key results have direct impact on the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the UNDSS Training section.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:          
  • Completion of secondary education. Bachelor’s degree would is desirable. 
Experience:       
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant security and/or training experience.
  • Completion of the SSAFE Training of Trainers course is desirable. 
  • Completion of the Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB) qualification is desirable. 
  • Completion of the Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course is desirable. 
  • Completion of UNDSS Local Security Assistant’s (LSA’s) course is desirable. 
  • Experience in the UN system or with an international non-governmental organization is desirable.
  • Direct experience in Somalia is desirable.  
  • Knowledge of and experience with web-based management systems specifically (ATLAS) is desirable.     

Language Requirements:            

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Fluency in Somali is desirable.
