Background

The United Nations Development Programme, UNDP Brazil, offers a selected group of outstanding graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to the opportunity to work in a successful multi-cultural international organization.

Students are welcome to apply, and depending on qualifications, shall be selected for internships that relate either to the organization's strategic activities or to administrative or technical functions. They are designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, but also complement other international studies, international development and inclusive growth.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the National UN Coordination Analyst the intern provides assistance to the execution of services in the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) by gathering and analyzing data and providing support to UN activities implementation and advocacy. The intern will collect data and statistics and do research, attend meetings and prepare minutes and reports as needed. The work will be adjusted to accommodate the specific skills and capacity of the intern with gradual increased responsibility. The intern is not expected to carry out regular staff functions but works so as to gain experience in the area of coordination work, advocacy, project implementation and monitoring and evaluation while contributing to the regular work carried out by UNRC office and UNDP staff.


Objectives
The purpose of the Internship Programme is to provide an opportunity to make substantive contributions to an office’s work, not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Interns cannot apply for posts during the period of internship. Should an offer of employment be envisaged, a 3-month break, from the end of the internship, must be respected.

Venue
Internships take place at the UNDP office in Brasilia, Brazil.

Financial Issues
Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP
. The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

Insurance
UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with UNDP.

Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which:
• requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or
• results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.

The intern works in a team with one national coordination analyst, one M&E focal point and one national volunteer. The intern works in close collaboration with the programme and project staff in the 24 agencies, funds and programmes that are part of the UN System in Brazil.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance and direct supervision, the Intern will be responsible for the following activities:

1. Contributes with the Post-2015 National Consultation process focusing on achievement of the following results: 

- Provision of assistance to inter-agency task force for the Post-2015 National Consultation:
a.b. Attend Task Force meetings, take notes and prepare minutes to be shared with UN agencies;
b.c. Assist with practical arrangements for workshops and missions. 
- Support in gathering information and feed the Post-2015 National Consultation database; 
- Support in generate statistics based on the data collected during the consultation process. 
- Assist in compilation of directory of NGOs in different thematic areas and map out their competencies and profiles. The intern may also be tasked to set up a network for information sharing among civil society.

2. Provides support to advocacy of UN activities focusing on the achievement of the following results: 

- Maintenance of information on RC system activities. 
- Assist with preparation of public information materials as requested. 
- Support to public events, lunching ceremonies, workshops and etc

3. Provides support to the implementation of the work of the Resident Coordinator’s Office focusing on achievement of the following results:

-Support the joint programmes activities and interagency thematic groups as requested. 
- Provide logistical support to missions of agencies without field representation

Supervision
UNDP makes every effort to maintain the highest standards with regards to the supervision, orientation and training of interns, in order to make their time at UNDP a valuable experience. Offices are responsible for providing appropriate supervision and guidance. A supervisor must be identified for the period of the internship.

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates for the Internship Programme are selected on a competitive basis. The following minimum qualifications are required:

Education: Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate OR have completed at least 50% of undergraduate studies in International Relations, Economics, Political Sciences, Social Sciences or related field.

Experience: Experience from studying or working with data collection and statistics is required. Working in a developing country is an advantage.

Language: Fluency in written and spoken Portuguese. Good written and spoken English.

Further Career Opportunities
The purpose of internships is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but, as mentioned, to complement an intern's studies. However, a number of interns, having completed their studies and met the necessary requirements, have gone on to further assignments with the UNDP or elsewhere in the United Nations system. Should an offer of employment be envisaged, a 3-month break, from the end of the internship, must be respected. Interns cannot apply for posts during the period of internship.
