United Nations Volunteers Programme:
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers, including experienced UN volunteers, throughout the world. UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive, and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity.

UNV is headquartered in Bonn, Germany and has approximately 150 staff positions – with the majority in Bonn and some positions with different UN peacekeeping and political missions, and in other Headquarters locations (e.g. New York and Tokyo).

Additionally, UNVs Management Services Division (MSD) provides support to the UN presence in Bonn with the Common Services Unit (CSU) and the Common Information Unit (CIU).

Organizational setting:
The overall objective of the common outreach by the UN organizations in Bonn, Germany, is to enhance public understanding and support for the work of these organizations and programmes, through the provision of information and the creation of partnerships, and thus enhance the image of the UN in the host country and the wider region.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Communications Specialist, Common Information Unit (CIU), the incumbent will assist in the implementation of the common outreach programme of the UN organizations in Bonn aimed at enhancing public understanding and support for the work of these organizations and communicating their role in promoting sustainable development as their shared theme and common brand. The incumbent will maintain the common UNinBonn website as well as an electronic common events calendar and media contact databases, place news items on the work of the UN organizations in Bonn in social media, assist in the production of audio-visual presentations and provide clerical and logistical support as required.

Specific duties include the following:

  • Supports the implementation of communication and advocacy strategies.
  • Prepares, updates and posts news items, features and background information on common outreach activities of the UN in Bonn on a regular basis.
  • Monitors and collects information from the UN organizations in Bonn, coordinating website content management in cooperation with relevant Information Assistants and/or webmasters of the UN organizations in Bonn to ensure regular and timely updating of UN organizations relevant webpages on the common website.
  • Responds to website related queries.
  • Places news items on common outreach activities on the work of the UN organizations in Bonn in social media including YouTube, Facebook or Twitter with a view to reaching younger audiences with UN in Bonn messages.
  • Maintains an electronic common activities and events calendar in close coordination with members of the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) Bonn and ensures its regular and timely update.
  • Compiles and manages comprehensive media contact databases for the dissemination of CIU press and information material.
  • Assists in the preparation of audio-visual presentation materials.
  • Provides logistical support for presentations and other activities at common outreach events.
  • Provides administrative support as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Completed secondary education. Undergraduate university degree in journalism or communications is desirable, but it is not a requirement.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience including at least one year in website content editing and writing.
  • Significant experience with English language drafting, writing and editing is required.
  • Proficiency in use of content management systems is desirable.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English and German is required.
