Background
The Energy and Environment Unit (EEU) supports the Government of India in meeting their commitments under the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP). The programmes in the Unit are organized around the thematic areas of Climate Change, Biodiversity Conservation, Land Degradation, Ozone Depleting Substances and Persistent Organic Pollutants. Projects in the respective thematic areas are implemented through UNDP’s core funds, bilateral and Government co financing and financing from Trust Funds like the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Montreal Protocol.
UNDP is implementing a project titled “Upscaling energy efficient production in small scale steel industry in India” supported by UNDP, AusAid and Ministry of Steel (Government of India). The objective of this project, which was launched in July 2013, is to scale-up adoption of energy efficient technologies in small scale steel industry in India.
UNDP seeks to facilitate the diffusion of energy efficient low carbon technologies in the Steel Re-rolling Mill (SRRM) sector and other subsector such as induction furnace, to bring down end-use energy level, improve productivity and cost competitiveness, and to reduce associated emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and related pollutant levels.
The Project Manager (Technical) is required to assist NPM to coordinate the Project activities and conduct following activities/duties/responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Project Manager (Technical ) will:
- Assist NPM to Plan the activities of the project and monitor progress against the approved work-plan;
- Monitor events as determined in the project monitoring schedule, and update the plan as required;
- Prepare progress reports for submission to UNDP on a quarterly basis;
- Manage and monitor project risks and report new risks and decision on possible actions if required; update status of these risks by maintaining the project risks log;
- Capture lessons learnt during project implementation and share it in appropriate forums
- Review of technical documents;
- Coordinate with field managers for effective implementation of project activities;
- Coordinate with industries in steel sector for implementation of energy efficient technologies;
- Assist NPM for regular progress reporting to Project Steering Committee (PSC);
- Assist NPM in preparation of the annual work plan (as well as quarterly plans if required).
- Any other duties assigned by NPM/Programme Analyst, UNDP.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
Essential:
- Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology in any discipline except IT discipline.
Desirable:
- Degree in Mechanical/ Metallurgical/Electrical/ Chemical Engineering or equivalent;
- Certified Energy Auditor or Certified Energy Manager;
- Masters in Engineering [Energy Studies].
Experience:
Essential:
- 5 years of experience in Steel/Energy Efficiency sector. If the experience involves both sectors, it is most preferred.
Desirable:
- Good communication, and organizational skills;
- Experience of working with Central and/or State Governments/ Industry Associations/ on similar assignments will be preferred;
- Experience in Bilateral/Multilateral Projects preferred;
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages;
- Familiarity with the working environment and professional standards of international organizations.
Language:
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
