Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the world’s largest implementing agency for protected areas, with a current portfolio of $5.3 billion, across 85 countries, with a total area larger than the area of India and Indonesia combined. In collaboration with World Bank, Conservation International and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, UNDP is co-organizing a thematic stream on Protected Areas: Meeting Development Challenges during the World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia in November, 2014. This stream will provide concrete tools, guidance and case studies in a range of inter-connected thematic areas on how to ensure that protected areas are fully integrated into development plans and policies, and how to ensure they become a core strategy for achieving National Sustainable Development Goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Regional Technical Officer and the Technical Specialist for Biodiversity and Ecosystems, the intern will support work on global protected areas, including supporting the World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia. Depending on the competencies and interests of the intern, and in consultation with supervisors, assignments will include:

  • Assist in communications with session leaders in Stream 5 of the World Parks Congress;
  • Assist in the development of promotional materials about Stream 5, including flyers for use at the Congress;
  • Assist in identifying, researching and summarizing research related to key issues identified in Stream 5 of the World Parks Congress, with a special emphasis on mainstreaming, National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and national sustainable development planning;
  • Assist with the development of e-learning modules as required;
  • Assist in the collection and dissemination of key learning materials, including guides, learning modules, presentations and other materials related to the World Parks Congress,
  • Assist in the collection and dissemination of all ‘legacy’ projects for Stream 5;
  • Assist in the design and population of a learning portal for protected areas;
  • Assist protected area-related work at the Regional Central Unit as required;
  • Perform other duties as required and mutually agreed.

Required Skills and Experience

Eligibility

 Education:

  • Current enrollment in a Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, international relations, public or business administration, environmental governance/studies or related field;
  • Note that candidates who have graduated are not eligible for internship.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Interns’ Expenses: 

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by: the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.  

Subsequent Employment: 

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
