Background

The United Nations Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator (UNRC/HC) offers a selected group of outstanding graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to the opportunity to work in a successful multi-cultural international organization. Students are welcome to apply, and depending on qualifications, shall be selected for internships that relate either to the organization's strategic activities or to administrative or technical functions. They are designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, but also complement other international studies, international development and inclusive growth. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Strategic Planning Specialist the interns provides assistance to the execution of services in the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator’s Office (RCHC-O) by gathering and analyzing data and providing support to UN activities implementation and advocacy.

The intern will collect data and statistics and do research, attend meetings and prepare minutes and reports as needed. The work will be adjusted to accommodate the specific skills and capacity of the intern with gradual increased responsibility. The intern is not expected to carry out regular staff functions but works so as to gain experience in the area of coordination work, advocacy, project implementation and monitoring and evaluation while contributing to the regular work carried out by RCHC-O.

Objectives


The purpose of the Internship Programme is to provide an opportunity to make substantive contributions to an office’s work, not to lead to further employment with RCO but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Interns cannot apply for posts during the period of internship. Should an offer of employment be envisaged, a 3-month break, from the end of the internship, must be respected.

he intern works in a team with three international colleagues (Strategic Planning Specialist, Special Assistant to the RC and UN Fellow) and two national staff (Communication Officer and Coordination Associate). The interns will work in close collaboration with the programme and project staff of the agencies, funds and programmes that are part of the UN System in Jordan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance and direct supervision, the Intern(s) will be responsible for one or more of the below activities:
  • Provides support to the second phase of the Post-2015 consultation process;
  • Provides support to communication and advocacy of UN activities;
  • Provides support to the implementation of the work of the RCHC-O Supervision The RCHC-Oe makes every effort to maintain the highest standards with regards to the supervision, orientation and training of interns, in order to make their time at the RCHC-O a valuable experience.

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates for the Internship Programme are selected on a competitive basis. The following minimum qualifications are required:

Education:
  • Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate or have completed at least 50% of undergraduate studies in International Relations, Economics, Political Sciences, Social Sciences, Communication, Journalism or related field.
Experience:
  • Experience from studying or working with data collection and statistics is required;
  • Working in a developing country is an advantage;
  • Expected to demonstrate a keen interest in the field of development;
  • Respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Language:
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Knowledge of Arabic is considered a strong asset.

Financial Issues


Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.
The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc. Insurance UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with the RCHC Office.

Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which:
  • Requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or
  • Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.
