Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Fund for Gender Equality (FGE) is a grantmaking unit within UN Women, created to accelerate women’s political and economic empowerment. Aligned to UN Women’s Strategic Plan, the Fund provides direct multi-year grants ranging from US $200,000 – US $1 million to women’s organizations and governmental agencies in developing countries.

In its fifth year of implementation, the Fund for Gender Equality has cemented its position as a multi-donor fund – having received generous support for its work from a variety of sources. Founded in 2009 with a contribution of U S$65 Million from Spain, followed by contributions from Norway, Mexico, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and private sector donor, Goldman Sachs, the Fund’s total income amounts to $75.6 million dollars.

The Fund has leveraged these initial investments in a strategic and targeted manner, and has allocated its resources through two grantmaking cycles, by providing an ongoing “package of services” (with a strong focus on results-based management) to its selected grantees; and in order to cover its operational costs. To date, the Fund has provided high-impact grants totaling US $56.5 million in grants to 96 grantee partners in 72 countries – and these grants are demonstrating results.

To support monitoring and reporting the Fund for Gender Equality is building an online database that will facilitate the submission and review of grantees reports. Before the system can be used past grantee reports need to be entered. Therefore FGE is looking a consultant to help with data entry.
