Background

Women’s leadership and participation in decision-making in both the public and private domains is one of UN Women’s thematic areas of work. UN Women’s programmes on leadership and participation are guided by a history of international commitments to women’s representation. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, upholds women’s right to participate in public life, the Beijing Platform for Action calls for removing barriers to equal participation, and the SADC Gender Protocol calls for equal representation of women and men in all decision-making positions. At the national level, UN Women’s Country Office (CO)’s programme in this thematic area focuses on the implementation of a law reform and policy review process to establish the legal infrastructure to secure and enforce the gender equality and women’s rights gains in the new Constitution, including the National Objective on achieving gender balance in all public and private institutions;  achievement of gender-responsive intra-party democracy;  creation of gender-responsive parliamentary oversight;  and capacity development and institutional change to attract more women, especially young women into political leadership, as well as into leadership positions in service delivery institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Specific activities in these areas of work will include the collection and sharing of information and evidence on women’s leadership and participation in decision-making;
  • documentation and presentation through various mediums the best practices and processes used by the CO and its partners to facilitate women’s entry into leadership positions;
  • provide research assistance for desk reviews on women’s leadership, and for the development of research and tracking tools for UN Women and its partners on the alignment of laws and policies to the new constitution;
  • provide assistance to, and participate in the development of assessments on women’s meaningful participation in Parliament and other decision-making spaces;
  • Monitors project/programme activities by reviewing a variety of records, including control plans, progress reports, project inputs, budget/financial reports and expenditures;
  • Provides accounting and administrative support to the project;
  • Assist in developing funding proposals, provide inputs for feedback to donor queries and concerns, and contribute to any other resource mobilization efforts of the Country Office;
  • Support the financial and substantive tracking and assessment of programme/projects implementation progress;
  • Financial and administrative monitoring and evaluation of the project, identification of operational and financial problems and development of solutions;
  • Provides accounting and administrative support to the project;
  • Ensures financial and administrative controls, assessing whether they are operating as per policies, procedures according to UN Women regulations;
  • Maintains good working relations with implementing partners, local authorities; and UN agencies for implementing joint programmes;
  • Ensures maintenance and inventory control of all project assets;
  • Programme support will include, among others, the convening of meetings, documentation of proceedings, developing calls for proposals and information notes as requested, and;
  • Efficient filling/documentation of project documents, work plans, progress reports, budgets and other implementation documents.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • University degree in Developmental studies, Gender studies, Law, and /or other related social science fields;
  • Possession of a Masters Degree would be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • 3 years experience in Gender Based Violence and Access to survivor services is an added advantage;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.
Language
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
