Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Communications Analyst, and in close collaboration with professional and support staff of Section, the intern shall perform the following assignments, which may vary in accordance with the priorities of the Section:

Assignments related to preparations for Beijing+20 and Post 2015 with a stronger focus on the former.

  • Assist with outreach to partners and new constituencies (namely youth, men and boys and US-based groups etc.)
  • Assist in developing and maintaining NGO database;
  • Assist with research and data collection on Beijing +20 national and shadow  reports;
  • Assist with compiling material for the section's various communications platforms, namely the inter/intra/extranet sites;
  • Assist the civil society advisory group (CSAG) focal point with outreach to CSAGs;
  • Assist in preparing briefing notes and talking points for high-level UN Women officials on gender issues;
  • Assist with planning and organizing meetings and events held by UN Women and with UN Women's participation in civil society events.

The intern reports directly to Communications Analyst, who provides guidance on priorities.  The intern may receive assignments from the Chief as well as other officers in the Unit who will provide guidance and supervision as required.

After the assignment, the intern will have:

  • Gained knowledge about NGOs working on gender issues;
  • Become familiar with the role of the Civil Society Section, the issues it covers and its relationship to other parts of the United Nations system.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in international relations, gender/ women's studies or similar at the university level. He or she should be currently enrolled in a Master's level degree or final year of undergraduate, or have graduated in the last year. 

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
