Background

The UNDP – Asia Pacific Regional Centre (APRC) established to serve countries of Asia and the Pacific, is a regional hub for development knowledge and expertise, providing policy and technical advisory as well as capacity development services to UNDP Country Offices, host Governments and Civil Society Organisations in the region. Under the guidance of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific and the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, the APRC provides policy and technical advisory, programme and knowledge services to 24 UNDP Country Offices in the core areas of UNDP’s work, including Resilience & Sustainable Development, Gender, Democratic Governance and Inclusive Growth & Poverty Reduction.    
 
APRC has also been in the forefront of supporting countries regionally to access various funds, including the GEF-administered Trust Funds, to implement environment and sustainable development projects. These have primarily been on natural resource management, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, international waters management and chemicals management.
 
In line with its Gender Equality Strategy 2014 - 2017, APRC is fully committed to mainstreaming gender issues throughout its programmes and projects, and continuously seek new entry points and innovative approaches to ensure gender impacts contribute towards transformational change that leads to gender equality at the household level and at all levels in the society.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for conducting research to support the RSD Team in: 
  • conducting a gender impact analysis of UNDP implemented environment and sustainable development projects in the Asia Pacific Region, based on  a detailed analysis of annual project review reports and project evaluation reports;
  • identifying entry points for integrating gender within environment and sustainable development projects, from inception to terminal evaluation; 
  • documenting good practices and lessons learned on mainstreaming gender in UNDP’s environment and sustainable development projects;
  • providing other support and assistance as needed and mutually agreed.

Required Skills and Experience

Eligibility

Education:
  • Current enrollment in a Master’s degree or equivalent in areas relevant to the work of UNDP APRC;
  • Interest in international development issues with emphasis on Gender, Sustainable Development, Environment and Energy;
  • Note that candidates who have graduated are not eligible for internship.

Experience:

  • Demonstrable skills in analytical thinking, communication, statistics and research;
  • Fully proficient in all major computer applications relevant to the position.
Language:
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English is essential.
Interns’ Expenses:
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by: the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.
Subsequent Employment:
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
