Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Head of Communications (NO B), the Communication Analyst will participate in the implementation of the corporate communications strategy, as well as in the design, management and implementation of the Country Office communications and publication strategies which are geared to influence the development agenda, promote public information and media outreach.

The Communications Analyst works in close collaboration with the Head of Communications (NO B) to ensure successful UNDP Communication Strategy implementation and to maintain a working relationship with the Programme and Operations teams, UN Agencies, UNDP HQs (Communications Office) and Regional Communications Manager for further strengthening UNDP Nepal outreach and advocacy efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions

  • Implement internal and external communications and outreach strategies, publications strategy and plan;
  • Implementation of the publications strategy and plan;
  • Update of information in UNDP Nepal web site as well as maintain the corporate standards and requirements;
  • Support to business development;
  • Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing.
Provides support to the planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach focusing on the achievement of following results:
  • Conduct communications needs assessments for UNDP (projects, country programme and corporate change initiatives, etc.);
  • Development/production of communication and advocacy instruments and materials for marketing and awareness-raising campaigns, including briefing materials and press releases;
  • Synthesis of proposals for project formulations to integrate advocacy and communication strategies into all aspects of UNDP’s development programme.
Ensures the implementation of the CO publications strategy and plan focusing on the achievement of the following results:
  • Facilitate to produce effective and timely publication (Annual Reports, Brochures, Factsheets;
  • Development Advocate);
  • Management of CO publication activities, such as drafting articles/stories/news, website contents, norms for publishing, design, liaise with the press and other suppliers to ensure timely production and publications dissemination.
Maintains a dynamic UNDP web site focusing on the achievement of the following results:
  • Maintains a dynamic UNDP Nepal web site based on corporate requirements in cooperation with the ICT staff;
  • Draft contents for the web site to ensure consistency of the materials;
  • Perform photography/videography and edit photos/videos.
Supports the business development focusing on achievement of the following results:

Launches and campaigns:

  • Promotion and dissemination of corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications such as the Human Development Report;
  • Promotion and maintenance of public information campaigns on UNDP activities, Millennium Development Goals, UN Reform and celebrating/commemorating International Days under the supervision of Communications Specialist.
Outreach and advocacy:
  • Undertake field visits to cover success stories for UNDP publications such as Website, Annual report and Development Advocate;
  • Ensure effective dissemination of advocacy materials to donors, Government partners, civil society and the media;
  • Organize media visits, press conferences and maintain a good relationship with the media.
Public information:
  • Timely and effective responses to inquiries for public information materials.
Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and management focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Identification and synthesis of best practices, success stories and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities;

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Completion of Masters Degree in Communication, Journalism, Information Technology, or other relevant fields;
  • Advanced training in communication, journalism, photo/video editing and desktop publishing would be an added advantage.
Experience:
  • Relevant experience at the national or international level in media and development communications is desirable but not a requirement;
  • The candidate  with knowledge in web content management,  desktop publishing, designing publications, knowledge of handling cameras and different software for creating and uploading news, videos and graphics in the website will have an advantage. Strong computer skills (MS Word, Publishing, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat);
  • Knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop, In Design, Illustrator, Adobe Flash, Adobe Premier would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of the UN and development issues would be an advantage.
Language:
  • Fluency in Nepali and English, both spoken and written.
