Background

The Government of the Republic of Yemen requested UNDP to facilitate the update of the Diagnostic Trade Integration Study (DTIS). The DTIS update takes place in the context of Yemen’s participation in the Enhanced Integrated Framework for Trade-related Technical assistance for Least Developed Countries (EIF).

The main objective of the study is to ensure that trade is mainstreamed into the national economic development process, based on a pro-poor strategy which relates growth to employment creation and human development.

The report is being prepared by a team of national experts under the guidance of an international consultant acting as Team Leader. The DTIS is structured in four main sections each containing a number of thematic reports prepared by individual experts (see the Annexes for a tentative outline of the report). Each report may contain graphs, boxes and tables.

Duties and Responsibilities

Eight thematic reports are expected, written by experts for whom English is not their mother tongue. The purpose of the copy-editing is to make sure that each report reads well prior to submission to the Team leader, who will then compile the overall DTIS update. The thematic reports will have approximately 40 pages each.

• Undertake spelling and grammar corrections following editorial guidelines for punctuation, acronyms, etc. provided by the Team leader;
• Ensure cohesion and continuity of the text;
• Correct errors in consultation with author/ project manager as necessary.;
• Submit tracked-changed edited version and clean edited version of the document;
• Submit the edited document in a timely fashion;
• Proof-read the consolidated draft DTIS version produced by the Team leader.

• Copy-editing is expected to be completed within a period of four (4) months, with the delivery of individual reports within one week of receiving each, including the consolidated draft DTIS. Approximately 350 pages of editing may be necessary;
• Thematic reports are expected at the end of August/ early September 2014 and the consolidated draft DTIS the third week of September;
• UNDP reserves the right to rescind this agreement due to unsatisfactory performance by the editor;
• Payments will be made on the basis of the actual volume of editing work.

• Copy-editing of up to 8 thematic reports and draft consolidated DTIS study.

Competencies

 Functional Competencies:

• Editor must have willingness and availability to work overtime or irregular hours if necessary. Ability to work to tight deadlines;
• Excellent writing and communication skills in English;
• Editor must guarantee timely delivery of the edited documents.

• Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

• Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communications, writing, international policy or related field;
• A first university degree in combination with qualifying professional and academic experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:

• Editor should have at least seven years relevant experience in professional editing in English, including editing of international development specific materials.

Language requirement:

• Editor must have perfect command of English;
• Working knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
