Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the UN Women Representative, the Communications Analyst is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of the Office communications and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media and the public.

The Communications Analyst maintains a working relationship with the Regional Communications Team. The Communications Analyst works in close collaboration with the Regional Office, Programme and Operations teams, staff of other UN Agencies, UN Women HQs staff (Communications Unit) ensuring successful UN Women communication strategy implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Supporting the planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach
  • Support to the elaboration and implementation of the publications strategy and plan
  • Maintenance of websites, databases and knowledge management systems
  • Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing.

Supporting the planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach

  • Under close guidance and supervision conducts communications needs assessments for MCO (projects, country programme and corporate change initiatives, etc);
  • Facilitates the development/production of communication and advocacy instruments and materials for marketing and awareness-raising campaigns, including preparation of briefing materials and press releases in coordination with the supervisor.
  • Helps integrate advocacy,  communication strategies and outreach strategy based on the corporate communications strategyinto proposals for project formulations;
  • Contribute to the analysis and research of the political, social and economic situation in the country and draft reports to support the UN Women country office programme planning;
  • Helps organize roundtable discussions, press conferences, and briefing sessions as needed;
  • Provide  inputs and information to assist in programme formulations;
  • Search and identify reference materials for the information database and photo library.

Support to the elaboration and implementation of the publications strategy and plan

  • Support the elaboration of MCO publications strategy and plan based on the corporate publications policy;
  • Contribute to the identification of storylines for publications and articles contributing to debates on key development issues;
  • Coordinate the translation/adaptation/rewriting of information received, printing and dissemination of publications and audio-visual materials.
  • Promote and disseminate corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications ;
  •  Promote and facilitate public information campaigns on UN Women activities as needed;
  • Respond timely and effectively to inquiries for public information materials.

Maintenance of websites, databases and knowledge management systems

  • Contribute to the design and maintenance of the office web sites based on corporate requirements in cooperation with the ICT staff;
  • Prepare/check the content for the web sites to ensure consistency of the materials;
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of office databases and knowledge systems.

Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing

  • Contribute substantially to identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities;
  • Provide sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositoriesas requested;
  • Organize and assist in the conduct of training and workshops on communications for development as appropriate.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in media relations, journalism or publishing.

Experience: 

  • Relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy would be desirable;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems;
  • Knowledge of gender and human rights issues desirable.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of official national language essential.
