Background

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life. On the ground in 177 countries and territories, UNDP works with national level partners to seek solutions to global and national development challenges.

UNDP Environment and Energy Group (EEG) is based in UNDP’s Bureau for Development Policy and is responsible for providing leadership and technical support toward delivery of the Environment and Sustainable Development pillar of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. Its main focus is to help countries develop capacity to manage and mainstream environment into national, local, global, and regional policy and practice in support of sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Officer in Charge of EEG, UNDP is recruiting an intern to carry out the following specific tasks:

  • Writing briefing notes and project documents;
  • Analyze and research global situations  in order to prepare documents for meetings and conventions;
  • Support planning and arrangements for EEG events;
  • Contribute to writing reports and publications for both regional and national networks;
  • Support on environment and energy based matters for outreach and partnership development;
  • Attend any EEG specific meetings and events in the NYC area;
  • Assist in translation efforts as necessary;
  • Support updates to Teamworks;
  • Other duties as necessary.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree programme (development, environment,international relations, political science, environmental studies, sociology, public or business administration, or other relevant disciplines);
  • Focus or demonstrated interest in environment and energy issues.

Experience:

  • Ability to gather information quickly, and prepare in various written formats;
  • Computer literate in standard software applications.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required;
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is a significant asset.

Availability:

Must be available 5 days a week.

Eligibility:

Current enrollment in a masters or equivalent degree in Economics, Social Sciences, International Relations, Political Sciences or related field;
Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.

Conditions of the Internship:

  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
  • UNDP does not pay for internships.  The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.

Subsequent Employment:

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
 

Applicants who are shortlisted for the interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Copy of school transcript;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out (i.e. USA).
