Background

The Istanbul Regional Centre (IRC) supports UNDP’s analytical, programmatic, and policy advisory services in the countries of Central and South-eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Turkey.  The Centre coordinates projects and provides services in three main areas which are Democratic Governance, Poverty Reduction, and Energy and Environment. The IRC Regional Security Office fulfills all tasks related to the management of safety and security for UNDP personnel in the region under the Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS (RBEC), including direct support to the Istanbul Regional Centre.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main task of an Intern will be to contribute to the accomplishment of various UNDP IRC Security initiatives. That would involve support to the Regional Security Advisor (RSA) on following tasks:

  • Media monitoring and drafting of Regional Security updates;
  • Assistance with Security projects received from UNDP Security Office in NY;
  • The development of template forms for easy storage of standard information and country updates, keeping databases up to date;
  • Security assessments of buildings and development of emergency precautionary measures;
  • Updating Staff Security Data bases related to access control and area warden systems;
  • Interfacing with current technology to recommend better solutions toward security challenges in the office;
  • Other required support to the work of RSA.

  • Excellent IT literacy.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a Masters or higher degree in International Relations or a related field with distinctive academic performance.

Experience:

  • Experience in a Security field is a an asset, but not required.

Language skills:

  • Fluent in English with excellent reading writing skills;
  • Turkish and or Russian considered an advantage.

Duration of the assignment

The overall duration of the internship is approximately 4 months, with estimated start in October 2014. 

Note:
Candidate who is selected for must submit the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;
  • Complete and sign the “Application Form” which is available at http://www.undp.org/internships.

UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.

Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out.

Have medical and life insurance.

Subsequent Employment:

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 

Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
