Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In 2010 UN Women (starting from January 2014 UN Women Multi-country office in Kazakhstan) in close partnership with IOM started implementation a three-year Joint Regional Migration Programme (RMP - more information about the programme could be found at http://www.unwomen-eeca.org/ru/resursi/?p=1040) for Central Asia funded by UK Government. From the beginning 2014 Phase II of this Programme is starting its implementation. The programme envisages UN Women-led interventions in three countries – Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. The RMP aims to contribute to poverty reduction in Central Asia through the improved livelihoods of migrant men and women and to protect the rights and enhance the social and economic opportunities of migrant men, women and their families.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of UN Women MCO Programme Specialist/RMP Manager, the intern will assist UN Women RMP team in communication and reporting as well as on providing general support to the team. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon.

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist RMP team in review on relevant thematic issues, including brief papers on gender aspects of labour migration;
  • Draft, edit, and format the UN Women’s contribution to the joint RMP quarterly bulletins, press releases and other communication products;
  • Assist in development of RMP information materials for UN Women website;
  • Assist UN Women RMP team in high-quality results-oriented reporting on the RMP to  the donor;
  • Assist UN Women team to arrange the RMP events, including meetings, trainings and other activities;
  • Assist UN Women team to ensure effective information flow, communication and coordination;
  • Assist to ensure timely and proper documentation of the programme implementation;
  • Perform other duties that may be required by the UN Women RMP Manager for effective implementation and monitoring of the programme.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in gender, migration and development, human rights, international law, or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Strong academic background in education, learning, staff development, international development or other related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in research and training event activities and working in an international environment would be an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English and at least basic knowledge of Russian.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note:

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
