Unit/ Project Background:

The Security Section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support with the global implementation of security mainstreaming and organizational security outreach.

The intern will assist the Security Advisor in the expansion and implementation of a security mainstreaming roll out strategy, which will look to incorporate the principals of organizational resilience management. Additionally the intern will look to develop and maintain the established UN Women security intranet web page, whilst engaging UN Women’s field based security focal points to improve information and support workflows.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Security Associate and in cooperation with the UN Women Security Advisor the intern will specifically be responsible for the following:

Development, Promulgation and Implementation of Security Mainstreaming Strategies:

  • Identification and exploitation of interaction platforms within the UN Women Programme and Project Life Cycles;
  • Research and develop existing and new security mainstreaming implementation methodologies;
  • Research and develop existing evaluation tools within UN Women to identify potential shortcoming and improvements to the mainstreaming process;
  • Identify and interact with field based UN Women security focal points and support actors;
  • Interact with security teams within UN sister agencies to identify similar or improved security mainstreaming systems;
  • Research and develop a global roll-out strategy to actuate a 12 month period of implementation.

Development and Maintenance of UN Women Security Intranet Web Page:

  • With guidance from the Security Associate, identify improvements to the existing security intranet web page to include field interaction and reporting mechanisms;
  • Consult with UN Women ICT to develop and implement proposed platforms;
  • Upload and maintain security information and advisory portals;
  • Consolidate ORMS field data and develop interaction points;
  • Research and develop practical interaction methodologies for HQs, Regional Offices and Field Offices.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in development studies, international relations, political science or other similar subject at the university level that includes risk management and/or security.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Study or experience in threat and risk analysis;
  • Proficient in using new technologies, web-based platforms;
  • Familiar with women’s rights issues or international development/relations.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.
