The Office of Communications at UNDP is at the forefront of advancing online communications and outreach within the organization and is seeking a professional with an interest in global issues and communications to assist in organizing and evaluating digital content and web sites and social media for UNDP’s online global network.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Chief, Online Communications, the English Digital Editor is part of the online communications team in the Office of Communications. He/she will contribute to the implementation of UNDP’s digital corporate strategy, maintaining the UNDP corporate website on a daily basis but also ensuring that UNDP’s digital presence can significantly be enhanced over time.  The consultant, working closely with the Spanish Digital Specialist and French Digital Specialist will also assist in supporting country offices in best practices around online communications, including reviewing content, supporting social media efforts and providing training.

Duties and Responsibilities

Editing / Producing:

  • Assist the Online Communications team in editing stories, pages, graphics and images; writing or developing texts as needed; liaising with the rest of the team to ensure consistency across languages;
  • Provide assistance in curating and presenting stories, data, images and videos in UNDP’s content management system.
  • Work with content providers to research or rewrite material from the standpoint of reader interest, clarity, political sensitivity, thoroughness and accuracy, as well as relevance to UNDP’s focus areas
  • Provide direct support, including content reviews and training, to country offices and other units in online communications.
  • Help evaluate web content and web architecture of country and global web sites;
  • Support Country Offices concerning web best practices;
  • Use social media such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to extend UNDP’s reach
  • Assist with other communications-related tasks as needed.

Expected deliverables:

Output 1:

Act as English language editor for results stories, section revamps, explainer pages (e.g. Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goals), infographics, concept notes.

The timeline and payment schedules for these deliverables will be:

  • 1 November  – Edit and publish 7 success stories, 8 blogs, two explainer pages, one infographic and one communications concept note;
  • 1 December  – Edit and publish 7 success stories, 8 blogs, two explainer pages, one infographic and one communications concept note;
  • 1 January – Edit and publish 7 success stories, 8 blogs, two explainer pages, one infographic and one communications concept note.

Corresponding payments shall be made following certification by UNDP that the services related to the TOR have been satisfactorily performed and Deliverables have been achieved by the or before the due dates.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, international relations, fine arts or related fields.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience in communications, journalism or multimedia, including significant experience with web publishing;
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills in English; French, Spanish or Arabic is an asset;
  • Working knowledge of photo editing software;
  • Previous experience in editing and presenting copy for the web using Content Management Systems
  • Knowledge of online social networking highly desired.
  • Experience training and coaching colleagues in online communications, particularly in the use of Content Management Systems highly desired;
  • Working knowledge of photo editing software;

  • Knowledge of online social networking highly desired.

Language:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English;
  • French, Spanish and Arabic an advantage.

Evaluation:

Shortlisted candidates will be rated according to the following criteria:

Weight/Criterion

  • 60% -  Previous experience writing, editing and presenting English copy in plain language;
  • 20% - Good understanding of online communications needs and excellent attention to detail;
  • 10% - Knowledge of web content systems;
  • 10% - Experience with multi-lingual content presentations, including French / Spanish or Arabic.

100% - Total

NB:

Only candidates obtaining a minimum of 70% in the Technical Evaluation would be considered for the Financial Evaluation.

Cumulative Analysis will be used in determining the best candidate for this assignment. When using this weighted scoring method, the award of the contract is made to the individual consultant whose offer has been evaluated and determined as responsive/compliant/acceptable, and having received the highest score out of a pre-determined set of weighted technical and financial criteria:

* Technical Criteria weight: 70%

* Financial Criteria weight: 30%
