Background

Created in July 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly and grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the UN Charter, UN Women, among other issues, works for the: elimination of discrimination against women and girls; empowerment of women; and achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. The Civil Society Section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support its work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Communications Analyst, and in close collaboration with professional and support staff of Section, the intern shall perform the following assignments, which may vary in accordance with the priorities of the Section:

Assignments related to preparations for Beijing+20 and Post 2015 with a stronger focus on the former:

  • Assist with outreach to partners and new constituencies (namely youth, men and boys and US-based groups etc.);
  • Assist in developing and maintaining NGO database;
  • Assist with research and data collection on Beijing +20 national and shadow reports;
  • Assist with compiling and submitting content and (writing) material for the Section’s various communications platforms, namely the inter/intra/extranet sites;
  • Assist the civil society advisory group (CSAG) focal point with outreach to CSAGs;
  • Assist in preparing briefing notes and talking points for high-level UN Women officials on gender issues;
  • Assist with planning and organizing meetings, campaigns and events held by UN Women and/or with UN Women’s participation.

Reporting Arrangements:

The intern reports directly to Communications Analyst, who provides guidance on priorities.  The intern may receive assignments from the Chief as well as other officers in the Unit who will provide guidance and supervision as required.

Learning Opportunities:

After the assignment, the intern will have:

  • Gained knowledge about NGOs working on gender issues;
  • Become familiar with the role of the Civil Society Section, the issues it covers and its relationship to other parts of the United Nations system;

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected (preference is: International Development, Gender Affairs or Political Science);
  • Must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Experience and familiarity with working in the civil society and/or NGO sector or with women’s groups would be desirable;
  • Familiarity with women’s rights issues or international development/relations would be desirable;
  • We seek self-starters and team players, who able to balance multiple responsibilities.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Knowledge of any of the other UN official languages is desired (particularly Spanish, French, Arabic).

Conditions:

    • UN Women will not pay for the internship; all the expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern.
    • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship; The Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;
    • The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of my internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof;
    • The Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.
