Background

The UNDP Young Professional Program (YPP) is designed for qualified and motivated young Myanmar graduates providing them with an opportunity to gain hands on experience in development work while augmenting UNDP’s professional capacity in achieving quality results for its country program activities.  Candidates for the YPP will be selected on a competitive basis in accordance with the UNDP Recruitment Guidelines for Service Contractors (SC). The key qualifications required for consideration will include meeting the age requirement of 32 or below, and a Bachelor’s Degree in a development related field.

The Communications Young Professional will work under the guidance of the Country Director and direct supervision of the Communication Specialist. The Communications Young Professional implements the corporate communications strategy, as well as provides inputs to the implementation of the Country Office communications and publication strategies which are geared to influence the development agenda, promote public and media outreach and mobilize political and financial support for UNDP.

The Communications Young Professional works in close collaboration with the Programme and Operations teams of the UNDP Country Office (CO), staff of other UN Agencies, UNDP HQs staff (Communications Office) and Government officials, international and local media, subject matter experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UNDP communication strategy implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Implementation of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach;
  • Implementation of the publications strategy and plan;
  • Maintenance of the UNDP web site and social media platforms;
  • Support to business development and communications and outreach.

Ensures the implementation of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Conduct of daily media monitoring in the Myanmar and  English language news outlets and identification of  items of interest as well as preparation of necessary responses;
  • Drafting of news stories, social media content  and photography as well as the production of related multi-media communications products based on the corporate communications strategy;
  • Compilation and management of a CO events calendar;
  • Compilation and management of contact lists for media, interpreters/translators, graphic designers and printers and related communications product suppliers;
  • Analysis of requirements and synthesis of proposals on ways to integrate advocacy and communication strategies into all aspects of the CO’s development programme during programme formulations.

Ensures implementation of the CO publications strategy and plan focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Provides support towards the development of publications, videos and other knowledge products and in particular leads the proof reading of Myanmar language content;
  • Maintains contact with printers and other suppliers to ensure quality, on time production;
  • Develops and implements publications and knowledge products dissemination plan, including for corporate advocacy materials and publications such as the Human Development Report.

Ensures the maintenance of the UNDP web site,  and social media platforms focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Identification and drafting of the content for the web site and social media platforms in both English and Myanmar languages;
  • Monitors the UNDP Myanmar social media platforms;
  • Maintenance of the office web sites based on corporate requirements.

Supports the business development focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Ensures visibility of CO through communications and knowledge products displays and placements at events;
  • Promotion and maintenance of public information campaigns on UNDP and other UN agencies activities;
  • Support to organization of roundtable discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, interviews, launches, etc.;
  • Forging of a “one UN” image through publicizing the significance of local UN reform efforts, joint programmes, common services. Organization and implementation of joint UN information campaigns (UN Day, World AIDS Day, etc.);
  • Effective responses to inquiries for public information materials.

 Impact of Results

The key results have an impact on creation of effective communications and dissemination of information on UNDP as UN’s global development network. In particular, the key results have an impact on implementation of UNDP communications and publication strategies, as well as reaching resource mobilization targets.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in media relations, journalism, publishing or related field.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of relevant experience at the national level in public relations, communications or advocacy is helpful but not mandatory;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems.

Language:

  • Fluency in the UN and national language of the duty station.
