Background

Candidates who previously applied need not re-apply.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.

In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.

In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.

Under the Vanuatu Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Department of Geology, Mines & Water Resources (DGMWR) is responsible for ensuring the sustainable use of the national’s water resources.  In August 2008, the DGMWR launched a National Water Strategy 2008 – 2018 (NWS), which provides a basis for proactive planning and engagement with communities, NGOs, donors and the private sector in the supply of water and the sustainable management of water resources. UNICEF currently supports the DGMWR towards the implementation of the NWS through the provision of technical advice and project implementation support. UNICEF currently employs one WASH Officer based in the Vanuatu Field Office, who provides technical assistance to DGMWR and is responsible for project implementation, and one WASH Engineer. The UNV WASH Officer will assist the WASH Officer and WASH Engineer in providing technical assistance to the government counterparts in water and sanitation and hygiene field.
