Background

Leadership in the response to HIV, as well as the work of  UNAIDS, is about social justice and social change – not only is the health of those affected crucial, but also their dignity and security, and the enabling social, cultural and legal social conditions necessary to achieve these.

High level policy, technical and programmatic advice to civil society and strategic support to community mobilization, through civil society engagement, are both human rights and public health imperatives.

UNAIDS promotes people-centred approaches, as people living with HIV and other members of civil society will be, and should be, the engines of health and social change efforts in their countries.

Objectives:

  1. Reinforce and reignite the engagement and leadership in the AIDS response of people living with HIV, women and key populations
  2. Ensure the HIV response has a powerful human face and is an engine for community mobilization for prevention, treatment and  social justice
  3. Provide leadership, advocacy, strategic information and programme coherence on human rights, gender equality, community mobilization and civil society leadership into the work of the Programme at country-level.
  4. Support excellence in national efforts to achieve human rights, goals through mobilization of leaders in government and civil society towards zero discrimination

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the responsible officer, the incumbent provides reliable and safe driving services to the operations and program staff (including consultants) in the Office.

Drive official vehicles for the transport of UNAIDS staff, officials and visitors, meeting personnel and visitors at the airport and assisting them with basic visa and customs formalities when required; and ensure the delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items.

Ensure cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through adequate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports, as well as the proper day-to-day maintenance, including minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes and water levels, car washing, etc so that the vehicle is clean and in good running condition at all times.

Safe-keep all the required documents/supplies such as insurance, registration papers, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and other spare parts, as well as keeping track of insurance and other tax formalities.

As required, provide informal interpretation services from/to the local language for the head of the office and official personnel using the car.

Provide general office assistance to office staff, including but not limited to filing, photocopying and maintaining stocks of stationary; in the mailing and distribution of newsletters and publications; payments of office telephone and other bills, as required.

Perform other related duties as assigned, including provision of support as required.

Required Skills and Experience

EDUCATION

Essential: Secondary education. Must have a valid and clean driver’s license

Desirable: Training or demonstrated knowledge of vehicle mechanic

EXPERIENCE

Essential:  A minimum of two to three years’ experience as driver of officials in an international institution, governmental organization, embassy or UN system with an excellent knowledge of the local traffic rules, regulations and geography. 

LANGUAGES

Essential: A good knowledge of the official language of the duty station together with that of the local language (where the local language is not an official language).

Desirable: Knowledge of another UN official language

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Demonstrated knowledge of the national driving rules and regulations, of local roads and conditions, as well as chauffeur protocol and courtesies.

Skills in minor vehicle repairs together with basic skills in the use of office equipment (e.g. photocopiers).
