Background

The Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) has the responsibility for developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan.  BPPS’s staff provides technical advice to Country Offices; advocates for UNDP corporate messages, represents UNDP at multi-stakeholder fora including public-private dialogues, government and civil society dialogues, South-South and Triangular cooperation initiatives, and engages in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas.  BPPS works closely with UNDP’s Crisis Response Unit (CRU) to support emergency and crisis response.  BPPS ensures that issues of risk are fully integrated into UNDP’s development programmes. BPPS assists UNDP and partners to achieve higher quality development results through an integrated approach that links results based management and performance monitoring with more effective and new ways of working.  BPPS supports UNDP and partners to be more innovative, knowledge and data driven including in its programme support efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Briefing Drafter based with the BPPS Directorate at HQ is responsible for support to all the functions of the Briefing and Communications Team across its remit.  Under the direction of the Policy and Programme Support Specialist for the Briefing and Communications Team and in collaboration with the Briefing Support Specialist as relevant, s/he will draft briefs, press releases, speeches, presentations, and support the development of substantive online content for the BPPS corporate webpages and social media profile. S/he will also be responsible for supporting preparation and planning for major events and ensuring fulfilment of requests through the corporate registry system.

S/he is responsible for performing and contributing to the following:

  • Drafting briefs, speeches, and advocacy/informational materials
  • Developing content for BPPS online presence including corporate web content and social media
  • Support to event planning and preparation
  • Ensures timely BPPS responses to correspondence received through the corporate registry system

Drafts briefs, speeches, presentations and advocacy/informational materials

  • Drafts and prepares briefs, speeches, presentations  in coordination with other teams throughout BPPS; and
  • Develops advocacy materials relating to UNDP’s priority policy/programming areas such as Fast Facts, Results pages, Issue Briefs, media releases, op-eds, brochures, etc.

Develops content for BPPS online presence including corporate web content and social media

  • Produces BPPS content for the corporate website about UNDP’s achievements and successes in policy/programming areas including news stories, corporate blogs, and videos, in coordination with BPPS teams and BERA; and
  • Implements strategies for crowd-sourced donations for major crises, through click-to-donate pages and social media (Facebook, Twitter).

Support to event planning and preparation

  • Supports the planning and preparation for major events;
  • Liaison with participants and speakers and prepares invitations, RSVPs, and follow-up correspondence; and
  • Supports the rapporteur function through note-taking and drafting of relevant meeting reports.

Ensures timely BPPS responses to correspondence received through the corporate registry system

  • Ensures BPPS's timely response to correspondence (through the corporate registry system); and
  • Monitors fulfillment of follow-up on (non-correspondence) action items received through the registry system
  • Advises the Team Leader and Directorate Manager on resource mobilization trends, opportunities, and challenges relevant to key policy and programme support priorities.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in international relations, communications, economics, business administration, social sciences or related disciplines.

Experience:

  • 2 years of professional work experience with the United Nations system. Proven writing ability;
  • Proven experience delivering on time against multiple deadlines;
  • Experience working in developing country settings is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, both written and oral;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
