Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

As part of its mandate, UN Women supports a broad range of diverse women to be heard and to participate in peace building and reconciliation processes, in line with Security Council resolutions 1325 (2000), 1889 (2008), 2122 (2013); UN General Assembly Resolution GA/65/283 (2011) and A/66/130 (2012); and the Secretary General’s 7-Point Action Plan on Gender-Responsive Peace building (A/65/354-S/2010466). As part of these efforts, UN Women periodically supports the convening of women to discuss and reach consensus on common priorities related to women’s role in peace building.  A Facilitator is sought to engage in all meetings and related initiatives.
