Background

The Sustainable Development Goals Fund (SDG-F) is a development cooperation mechanism created in 2014 by the government of Spain and UNDP, on behalf of the UN system, to support sustainable development activities through integrated and multidimensional joint programmes Gender and women’s empowerment is a cross-cutting priority in all our areas of work. The SDG-F intends to act as a bridge in the transition from MDGs to SDGs, providing concrete experiences on “how” to achieve a sustainable and inclusive world post 2015.

The SDG-F Secretariat is the operational coordination unit for the Fund and services the SDG-F Steering Committee. The Secretariat sits in the Bureau for External Relations and Advocacy of UNDP headquarters. The Secretariat is delegated by the Steering Committee to ensure policies and strategies decided by the Steering Committee are implemented and adhered to. 

The Junior Advocacy and Events Consultant will work under the guidance and supervision of the SDG-F director and in close coordination with the SDG-F Secretariat Team in New York. He/She will support general activities and advocacy activities of the SDG-F including: support for the organization of events, preparing and uploading content to SDG-F website and social media channels, and coordinating relations with partners, journalists, country offices and providers.

The work of the incumbent will contribute to the effective implementation of the SDG-F strategy favoring a productive engagement of the SDG-F with its various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

Organization and communication of events:

  • Research and study documents for advocacy activities;
  • Provide logistical support in the organization of the events;
  • Manage RSVP and answer to attendants queries;
  • Coordinate the dissemination and distribution of invitations, including follow-up calls when necessary;
  • Ensure that quality pictures and videos are gathered during each event;
  • Live tweeting;
  • Support the preparation of presentations, power points;
  • Manage, create and improve SDG-F contact database;
  • Support communication activities with journalists.

Web management and content production (video editing and graphic design):

  • Produce written and multimedia content that is clear, concise, vivid, and conveys key messages.
  • Design twitter cards with images and information from the SDG-F joint programmes.
  • Edit short videos from SDG-F footage gathered by partners and country offices.
  • Regularly prepare, write and edit new web content posting it to the English website;
  • Liaise with UN staff in the field to obtain inputs that vividly convey the work supported by the SDG-F. Ensure that all content is timely, accurate and compelling;
  • Liaise with translators/web editors;
  • Analyze traffic statistics and report on a monthly basis relevant information;
  • Regularly review website content, design and functionality to ensure updates are reflected; make recommendations to improve design and functionality and ensure quality implementation;
  • Liaise with the SDG-F Technical Web Manager on technical issues of site;
  • Prepare and upload social media content (You Tube, Facebook and Twitter, etc);
  • Ensure consistency and quality of language;
  • Research/organize a photo and video gallery of MDG-F photos that can be used on website and elsewhere; prepare compelling and descriptive captions;
  • Research and organize all media clippings on SDG-F activities programmes and ensure that the material is ready to post on website in an accessible manner;

Relations with partners, journalists, country offices and providers:

  • Organize quarterly meetings with joint programmes communication focal points, including the preparation of meetings agendas and drafting of minutes.
  • Provide communication and advocacy support when required by joint programmes and partners.
  • Coordinate printing and designing processes.
  • Create media database and support relations with journalists.

Competencies

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey messages and develop content that is creative, compelling and reflective of real life stories.
  • Familiarity with online video publishing and knowledge of online social networking required;
  • Interest in and familiarity with international development, the Millennium Development Goals, the Post 2015 Agenda and the work of the United Nations desirable. Strong understanding and knowledge of development issues, particularly those related to poverty reduction, inequality and the MDGs;
  • Strong coordination skills, good time management and results oriented;
  • Should have a good sense of design and basic page layout;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex development concepts and recommendations in a clear and persuasive manner that is tailored to a range of audiences;
  • Meticulous copy-editing skills and a rigorous eye for content and grammatical accuracy;
  • Proven ability to find creative solutions to complex problems with an excellent ability to work effectively under pressure and with tight timelines;
  • Results oriented: Uses initiative to deliver required outputs and planned results in accordance with time and budget targets;
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter, with an excellent combination of strategic vision on advocacy and communication as well as practical technical skills;
  • Proficient in the use of computers and office software packages.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University degree or equivalent in Social Science, Communications, Fine Arts or related fields.

Experience:

  • 2 years of experience;
  • Relevant experience in advocacy, communications, journalism or multimedia, including significant experience with web publishing and institutional communications;
  • Demonstrated experience working with and creating content for multilingual global websites;
  • Experience using a Content Management System (preferably Drupal);
  • Experience in conceiving creative, attractive and compelling communication and advocacy materials that promote the MDGs and development work. Demonstrated experience in dissemination of these;
  • Experience communicating with a wide range of stakeholders and partners on a common agenda, coordinating complex relationships with ease;
  • Experience supporting the coordination of events for organizations engaged in international development;
  • Professional experience developing communication strategies for international organizations and/or public administrations.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English;
  • Good working knowledge of Spanish would be a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Deliverables and Timelines: 

Payments will be made on a monthly basis.

Payments will be made on the satisfactory delivery of the products and the appropriate management of associated processes needed to achieve the above-mentioned tasks and objectives.

Terms:

  • This job will require working with the SDG-F Secretariat in New York.

Evaluation:

A cumulative analysis will be used. This method combines technical and financial proposals giving a weight of 70% to the acceptable technical proposals and 30% to the financial offer. Financial proposals will only be considered for candidates who meet the minimum 70% of the technical part.

Individual consultants will be evaluated based on the following methodology.

When using this weighted scoring method, the award of the contract should be made to the individual consultant whose offer has been evaluated and determined as:

  • Responsive/compliant/acceptable; and
  • Having received the highest score out of a pre-determined set of weighted technical and financial criteria specific to the solicitation;
  • Technical Criteria weight: 70%;
  • Financial Criteria weight: 30%.

Only candidates obtaining a minimum of 14 points would be considered for the Financial Evaluation.
