Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Within UN Women, the Programme Division sets the standards, assures the quality of program design, and provides guidance to country level program work of UN Women, as well as supports the coordination role of UN Women at regional and country level. It supports the effective use of results based management and reporting across the organization. It also manages global Trust funds, and Global Programs, and it provides technical capacity to countries on request, including a humanitarian response capacity.

The Planning and Programme Guidance Unit (PPGU), supports the Programme Directorate by developing and maintaining results-based guidance, policies, procedures and tools for UN Women staff to deliver high-quality programmes and for the organization to deliver on its mandate more broadly.  PPGU also support organizational corporate reporting, identifying and disseminating best practices as part of organizational knowledge management.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN-Women is committed to strengthening capacity in results-based management, building a culture of effective and efficient programme management, and institutionalizing a strong culture of results-based management, reporting, knowledge management and evaluation. Every year UN-Women field offices develops and presents Strategic Notes and Annual Work Plans formulating their strategic ambitions, setting results targets, and elaborating on their activity plans in short and medium term. At year-end all offices are required to report, by using a corporate results management system (RMS), on how well they performed compared to their plans.

Using those plans and reports to develop and collate data and knowledge about the work we do on the ground is vital. Throughout the year, PPGU is undertaking various activities to advance this area of work, and it is in this regard that PPGU now is seeking the support of 1-2 intern(s) for analyzing the costing structure of activities performed and results achieved by our country offices.

Using Strategic Notes/Annual Work Plans, Annual Reports, and other available and relevant resources, the intern(s) will do an initial screening of the data sources, come up with a methodology for how to analyze the data, and compile an analysis based on the chosen methodology presenting quantitative data and describing how an average costing structure looks for a sample of core programmable activities across regions.

A detailed work plan, specifying the deliverables and timelines, will be developed in collaboration with the intern(s) and PPGU, and a tentative plan may look something like this:

  • 2-3 weeks - Deliverable 1: Screening of the data sources;
  • 4-6 weeks - Deliverable 2: Developing methodology for data analysis;
  • 2-3 weeks - Deliverable 3: Write report and present analysis.

During the internship, the intern(s) will report to the Programme Analyst in PPGU, and other resource persons will be amongst others the PPGU Programme Specialist and the Chief of PPGU. Weekly progress meetings with the supervisor and the resource persons will be scheduled, and support will be provided on an everyday basis as needed.

This internship will provide the right intern(s) with an exciting opportunity to dig down in the details of core programmable work of a UN organization.

Note:

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
