UNCDF is the UN’s capital investment agency for the world’s 49 least developed countries. It creates new opportunities for poor people and their communities by increasing access to microfinance and investment capital. UNCDF focuses on Africa and the poorest countries of Asia, with a special commitment to countries emerging from conflict or crisis.

Duties and Responsibilities

The key result expected is support to the Communication and Knowledge Management of 3 UNCDF programmes; MicroLead, Mobile Money for the Poor and YouthStart, as directed by the Knowledge Management Associate. Specifically, the key activities of the intern will involve the following: 

  • Providing input and maintain the contact database of three programmes;
  • Organizing events and workshops;
  • Writing of blog articles, news and press releases;
  • Maintaining presence in social networks;
  • Producing of a variety of communication tools;
  • Reporting and writing of booklets on workshops (static or interactive);
  • Other tasks as requested by the Knowledge Management Associate.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in Masters Programme in Master in public relations/marketing/communication/journalism or related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated Interest in Microfinance and questions related to development in general;
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team structure in a multicultural environment;
  • Excellent computer capabilities (Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Notions of Design/Graphics.

Languages:

  • Strong writing and speaking abilities in English and French.

Work Arrangements:

  • The intern will work full-time in the Brussels UNCDF office. 
  • Work space will be provided, and the intern will have access to a computer.
  • Internships are not remunerated. UNCDF policies do not provide for interns to be compensated for travel, salaries and living expenses.

UNCDF may accept interns providing the following conditions are met:

  • Enrolled in a master’s programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship (if a candidate is graduating before the internship period begins, they are no longer eligible); or
  • Pursuing their university/college studies, having completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree, if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
  • Not have graduated prior to the beginning of the internship.

Other:

  • Interns are not staff members of the United Nations.
  • All costs connected with an intern's participation in the programme must be borne by the students or the nominating institutions as appropriate.
