Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women (UNW) will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women has a series of events and programme leading up to and beyond International Women’s Day. 2015 is a pivotal year for normative work on gender equality, including Beijing +20, CEDAW and the Post 2015 Agenda. 2015 is also an important year for global normative work on Climate Change, with the intergovernmental negotiations (COP21 Paris) in November and Disaster Risk Reduction with the UNDRR in Sendai in March. With these important global events, and UN Women’s increasing network and outreach directed at national, regional and global partners, UN Women Bangladesh requires a Communications Social Media specialist to develop programmatic content for the website and a number of social media platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will be responsible for:

  • Identifying and developing substantial programmatic content for the UN Women Bangladesh Country website and social media package;
  • Preparing guidance notes and making presentations to the staff on capturing content and key campaigns ideas for website and social media outlets, strategically increasing the visibility and profile of the page and handle and engaging influencer such as bloggers and online journalists;
  • Establishing Twitter account for UN Women Country Representative and processes for managing this communication tool for key UN Women staff; creating a database for relevant twitter messages; preparingrepository of strategic Twitter handles that are used by UN Women and strategicpartners;
  • Supporting the International Women’s Day series of events including planning and logistics of the events;
  • Supporting HeForShe outreach activities based on the Regional Office’s Localized HeForShe Manual and Plan of Action, in drafting press releases; sending media invitation; securing exclusive interviews with UN Women Country Representative and Programme Managers as well as with identified partners;
  • Preparing HeForShe campaign-related reports, concept notes, presentations, guidance materials, factsheets and other tools for effective outreach in Bangladesh.

Deliverables:

  • Updated country webpage on UN Women Asia and the Pacific website including programme focus in five (5) areas; results and partner portfolio by working closely with Regional Communications team in Bangkok, Thailand;
  • Submission of post campaign-related result reports;
  • Systematically Mapping of all digital materials and posting them onto UN Women corporate repository systems;
  • Completed five social media packages for UN Women Bangladesh for the months of March, April, June, July and August based on international days and thematic priorities;
  • Recommended Key Messages with Bangladesh specifics for CSW 59/Beijing +20 processes advocacy.

Institutional Arrangements:

  • The consultant will receive overall guidance from the Country Representative with direct supervision of the Coordinator, Violence Against Women and work closely with the Monitoring and Communications Officer, Gender and Climate Change.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • A post-graduate degree or equivalent in communication studies, preferably with some demonstrable results or qualifications in online communications achievements;

Experience:

  • Five years communications experience, with expert writing skills, the ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines within an international setting;
  • Experience in the use of social media, in the content of gender equality/violence against women/ gender studies;
  • Highly creative with experience in identifying target audiences and devising social media strategies that engage, inform and motivate.

Language:

  • Fluent in English.
