Background

UNDP’s Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is seeking to strengthen both its web and social media presence as means to both increase its outreach efforts and reach new targeted audiences, no least on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Human Development Concept (for more information on the HD and HDR please visit http://hdr.undp.org/en/humandev )

HDRO is seeking a graduate student with an interest in communication and human development related issues to assist in building and implementing a communication strategy for external outreach efforts.

This internship also provides the opportunity to participate in the communications strategy towards the launch of the 2015 Human Development Report in November.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director and the Communications Analyst of HDRO, the Intern will contribute to the tasks described below.

The tasks are therefore as following:

  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the communication and media strategy of HDRO;
  • Support the Communications Analyst in the preparation a range of communication products and materials (fact sheets, press releases, etc.);
  • Draft, edit and proofreading of the HDRO weekly newsletter;
  • Support the Communications Analyst in HDRO outreach efforts to international and specialized media;
  • Support external outreach efforts but mapping new potential audiences and specialized media outlets;
  •  Support the management of HDRO’s presence on social media including: 1) regular updates and personal communications with fans and followers (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumbrl), 2) development of a series of social media campaigns;
  • Analyze the nature of human development in the news and share relevant news updates with the communications team.

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s / postgraduate university programme in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Social Sciences or International Relations.

Experience:

  • Experience in communications and social media outreach;
  • Experience engaging and building communities on social networks, particularly Twitter and Facebook
  • Proficient in using new technologies, web-based platforms and social media networks; familiarity with HootSuite is a plus;
  • Familiarity with one or more developing regions.

Languages:

  • Fluent in English;
  • Working knowledge of at least one other UN language desirable.

Conditions:

UNDP may accept interns provided the following conditions are met:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.
  • The costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship.
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
