On 26 May 2010 the Governments of Indonesia and Norway signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) that established a REDD+ partnership, whereby Norway committed a US$1 billion grant based on a ‘payment for performance’ modality in reducing emissions from forest and peatland areas. Phase I of this partnership- the ‘readiness’ phase- has largely been completed, culminating with operationalisation of the National REDD+ Agency (BP REDD+) in January 2014. The Norway-Indonesia partnership is now in an interim phase prior to the beginning of the Phase II. During Phase II, institutional and operational readiness of large-scale verified emissions reduction programmes will be finalised.

 UNORCID (United Nations Office for REDD+ Coordination in Indonesia) is the UN System focal point for REDD+ in Indonesia, and serves as a coordinating body and knowledge institution. Building on the competitive advantage and domain expertise of nine UN Partner Agencies (UNDP, UNOPS, ILO, FAO, UNEP, UNESCO, WFP, UNU, and UNODC), UNORCID provides decision-makers and stakeholders at the national and local levels with relevant information and tools to support successful REDD+ implementation. UNORCID was inaugurated on 17 November 2011 by the UN Secretary General, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Republic of Indonesia and the UN System.

To support UNORCID’s activities,  a Jakarta-based translator will be recruited and and located under supervision of Chief of Communications Unit. S/he will ensure consistent and high quality translation services delivered within deadline.  These materials will most likely deal with issues pertaining to REDD+ implementation in Indonesia as well as the link to sustainable development and a post-2015 Development Agenda.  In addition, s/he will support UNORCID faciliatted events such as workshops, seminars and discussion series by providing simultaneous interpretation from English to bahasa and vice versa.

Duties and Responsibilities

As described above, the consultant main tasks is to provide the following support to the UNORCID team on :

  • Translation and editing works from English to Bahasa and vice versa of internal UNORCID documents, brief, TORs, manual and working papers;
  • In addition, she/he is responsible to provide simultaneous interpretation for UNORCID’s events and/or its joint events with other parties;
  • All assigned tasks to be done during the period of February 2015 to May 2015.

Deliverables

  • 10-days for translation of Private Sector Summit and UNEP Financing Initiatives event and UNORCID’s 2014 Annual Report and its content-supporting materials event, which will be approximately 125 pages.
  • 17-days translating activity of SRAP Report and communication and questionnaires materials for GDP for the Poor survey for Jambi and Sulawesi Tenggara provinces. All will be in total of approximately 225 pages.
  • 6-daystranslating activityand editing services of UNORCID newsletter for January to March editions. All will be in total of approximately 90 pages.
  • Simultaneous interpretation services for 2-days of the Forest Ecosystem Valuation Study Report;
  • Simultaneous interpretation services for 2-daysof the Gender and Green Economy Dialogue Series;
  • 16-days translation service of Forest Ecosystem Valuation Report and its annexes; TOR and reading materials for gender and green economy workshops. All will be in total of approximately 225 pages.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • A Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines.

Background and Experience:

  • At least 4 (four) years of working experience as a translator and simultaneous interpreter in the UN agencies and/or INGOs for Diploma Degree and 3 (three) years for Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Experiences in providing simultaneous interpretation for national and international events, preferably those related to REDD issues;
  • Experience in translating texts is required as well as the ability to demonstrate a strong ability to translate specialized texts under deadline pressure;
  • Experience in simultaneous translation is a requirement;
  • Familiarity with climate change and REDD is a clear advantage.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Bahasa, written and spoken.

Computer Skills:

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
