Background

Gender Team is at the forefront of UNDP's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment.  The Gender Team is part of the Bureau for Policy and Program Support (BPPS) of UNDP which provides policy advice and programme support to all of UNDP’s work.

The Gender Team works to ensure gender equality and the empowerment of women are integrated into every aspect of UNDP’s work to support countries to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities and exclusion as laid out in UNDP’s strategic plan three main areas of work: a) sustainable development pathways; b) inclusive and effective democratic governance and c) resilience-building and its Gender Equality Strategy 2014-2017.  In 2011, the Gender Team launched the Gender Equality Seal. The Seal is a corporate certification process that recognizes good performance of UNDP Country Offices, Regional Service Centres and Regional Bureaux in delivering transformational gender equality results. The Seal is an initiative that generates incentives for solid work on gender equality, and empowers managers and Country Offices to advance our work on gender equality to better support countries’ gender equality goals.

This internship position is with the Institutional Development Cluster of UNDP’s Gender Team. The cluster is focusing in adapting UNDP’s institutional framework to better implement its gender mainstreaming strategy and achieve UNDP goals. The Cluster focuses mainly on strategic planning; accountability and oversight frameworks for gender equality; Knowledge Management and communication; Capacity Development and Learning; and UN inter-agency coordination.

The Cluster seeks to hire one intern. The selected candidate will support the Institutional Development Cluster primarily working on the Gender Equality Seal and other research and reporting projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Cluster Leader, the intern will perform the following duties:

  • Assist with UNDP corporate research and reporting on gender equality issues, including Secretary General Reports on the implementation of UN resolutions;
  • Support capacity building initiatives  linked to the gender marker;
  • Assist the implementation of the Gender Equality Seal programme-– a corporate certification process for Country Offices on gender equality and women’s empowerment- including support the review of Country Offices/Units results from the online assessment tool of the Gender Equality Seal; the systematization of good practices from the UNDP Seal Programme, etc.;
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of charts, briefing notes, etc. to support the work of the cluster;
  • Assist with organizing and promoting learning and knowledge events;
  • Assist with research and writing for discussions on UNDP knowledge networks.

  • Knowledge of gender equality and women’s rights in the context of development;
  •  Knowledge of the UN system is an asset;
  • Knowledge of evaluation processes is an asset;
  • Basic knowledge of statistics.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a Masters programme in the areas of international development, gender studies, public administration, or related field in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship (if a candidate is graduating before the internship period begins, they are no longer eligible); or
  • If pursuing their studies in a country where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution toward the completion of a degree. (If your situation, please make it clear);
  • Not have graduated or completed all degree requirements prior to the beginning of the internship;
  • The intern must return to her/his studies after the internship with UNDP

Please note: Non-masters level candidates will not be considered. Candidates who will not return to school to finish a degree will not be considered.

Experience:

  • Academic knowledge  and experience of gender mainstreaming processes;
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team structure in a multicultural environment is desirable;
  • Experience conducting research, writing and editing reports, creating presentations, and basic statistics knowledge;
  • Experience in developing countries/development project management especially on gender issues is desirable.

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is a strong advantage.

Conditions:

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. The costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.
