Background

UNDP’s Environment and Energy Unit works in collaboration with national and international partner in Uzbekistan to strengthen environmental governance, to build institutional and individual capacities to mitigate anticipated climate change impacts, to mainstream biodiversity conservation principles into sectorial policies and programmes, and to promote renewable energy and sustainable use of land and water resources. UNDP works at policy and community levels to promote best local and international practices in the field of environment and energy in Uzbekistan.

The Intern will support the design, planning, implementation and management of the country programme in the field of Environment and Energy and relevant projects and initiatives. The Intern will work in close collaboration with the UNDP programme and operations staff and government partners in ensuring successful UNDP programme development and implementation.

The duty station will be UNDP Country Office in Uzbekistan (Tashkent) with infrequent travel to other regions of Uzbekistan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work status (full time / part time): Full-time (Monday – Friday, 40 hours/week).

Spring term: 2 March – 31 May, 2015.

Summer term: 1 June – 31 August, 2015.

Fall term: 1 September – 15 December, 2015.

Expected duration of the assignment: Incumbents should indicate in their application the term (or terms, up-to two consecutive terms) their applying for.

Reports To:  Programme Analyst/Head of Environment & Energy Unit.

A work plan will be agreed by the intern and UNDP Uzbekistan at the beginning of the assignment where the expected outputs and milestones based on the Scope of Work as described below will be detailed.

Scope of Work:

  • Substantive and operational support in implementation of Environment and Energy portfolio of UNDP Uzbekistan;
  • Assistance with on-going monitoring and evaluation activities, preparation of relevant TORs;
  • Substantive, administrative and logistical support for internal and external events, technical missions to the country of UN/DP advisors and consultants;
  • Support the knowledge management activities of the Environment and Energy Unit through various aspects of research;
  • Support information campaigns and visibility events, preparation of press releases, newsletters and bulletins, training material;
  • Assist with documentation, record-keeping and systematic compilation of all on-going and past activities;
  • Support in editing programme and project related documents in English (and Russian/Uzbek depending on relevant knowledge skills of the intern);
  • Support in drafting and editing official correspondence, creating an electronic and offline database of communication;
  • Review internal database of programme and project related documents and propose a catalogue for storing information, collect all missing information from various stakeholders;
  • Help identify critical issues relating to Environment and Energy for analysis and research to inform future programming in these areas;
  • Support in development of new project proposals in line with national environmental priorities and UNDP comparative advantage and mandate;
  • Identify and develop possible areas for partnership with national and international organizations, donors, civil society and media;
  • Compile research activities in the portfolio to inform and enhance intervention strategies and build knowledge base;
  • Provide insights into the findings of project activities, and prepare summaries, briefs and notes for management to inform interventions, strategies, projects and programmes;
  • Support in drafting activity reports and other substantive publications and updating UNDP website on a regular basis;
  • Prepare and provide input into analytical publications and reports on natural resource management, climate change, environment and related issues;
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor, necessary for successful implementation of activities and projects in the portfolio;

Conditions for Internship

Incumbents are solely responsible for all costs associated with their internship with UNDP Uzbekistan, including livings costs, insurance and travel to/from duty station and any other costs that incumbents incur during the internship. Service related travel within Uzbekistan, duly authorized by a responsible officer will be covered by UNDP.

Insurance

UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship.

Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which:

  • requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or
  • results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.

Third-party claims:

UNDP is not responsible for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the interns during the internship.

Subsequent Employment

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Should an offer of employment be envisaged, a 3-month break, from the end of the internship, must be respected. Interns cannot apply for posts during the period of internship.

Status

  • Interns are considered gratis personnel. They are not staff members.
  • Interns may not be sought or accepted as substitutes for staff to be recruited against authorized posts.
  • Interns may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in Master programme in natural resource management, environmental policy or science, international development with concentration in environment or a related field.

Experience:

  • Relevant experience in the field of natural resource management, environmental policy and science is an asset;
  • Experience in project proposal and project documents development is an asset.
  • Knowledge of GEF and other environmental vertical funds is an asset.
  • International experience in a related area, particularly UN, IFIs and international organizations is an asset.
  • Advanced user of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc), experience in handling of web based management systems is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluent English;
  • knowledge of Russian (and/or Uzbek) an asset
