Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Public Information Officer, the National Public Information Officer (Communication Officer) support the implementation of UNOCHA’s corporate communications strategy, as well as provides inputs to the design, management and implementation of the Country Office communications and publication strategies which are geared to influence the development agenda, promote public and media outreach and mobilize political and financial support for UNOCHA Yemen.

National Public Information/Communications Officer  works in close collaboration with the staff of other UN Agencies, UNOCHA HQs staff (Communications Office) and Government officials, National and International NGOs, international and local media, subject matter experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UNOCHA communication strategy implementation.  Support the development and implementation of a communications strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain constructive media relations focusing on:

  • Maintain relations with media and support the office in all public information activities;
  • Organize and support local and international media trips and briefings;
  • Serve as focal point for organizing all special events, including the YHRP launch
  • Monitor and support capacity building activities to help local media better report on humanitarian work;
  • Support the management of OCHA Yemen social media platforms
  • Conduct daily media monitoring, ensuring management are apprised of humanitarian issues in the media.

Produce and support production of information outputs focusing on:

  • Coordinate inputs and draft internal and external daily, weekly and monthly reports
  • Research/analyze data for public statements, special reports and briefing papers
  • Actively contribute to the development and regular update of coordination and information tools, information fact sheets and OCHA photo database;
  • Collaborate closely with OCHA field offices and information counterparts, UN agencies and NGOs to ensure accurate and effective information dissemination on humanitarian issues in Yemen

Support information management activities focusing on:

  • Collect and catalogue relevant information on Yemen to be used in information products
  • Monitor progress of and obtain all major humanitarian publications on Yemen and ensure their distribution and filing within the unit/office
  • Maintain and update photographs to be used in information products and other functions
  • Develop briefing materials as well as power point presentations.

Coordinate the HCN focusing on the achievement of the following:

  • Provide Secretariat services for the HCN, ensure the work plan is implemented, coordinate all group activities
  • Regularly brief management on the activities of the HCN
  • Participate in planning and organising public information group meetings;
  • Represent OCHA at meetings as requested.

Facilitate knowledge building and management focusing on:

  • Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities;
  • Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories;
  • Provision of training and advice to staff on communications.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in Communication, Journalism, International relations, or any related field.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience at the national or international level preferably in humanitarian/development reporting and public information work;
  • Experience in media and database management an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English is essential;
  • Fluency in Arabic is a must.
