Background

Under the overall supervision of the HoO, and with support and methodological guidance from the head of the coordination unit the incumbent facilitates humanitarian activities in the country. The support provided to OCHA  focuses on the following three sets of activities: a) preparedness, b) support to emergency response, and c) development of national humanitarian coordination networks. For this purpose, the humanitarian team works with the HC and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), national and local authorities when appropriate and relevant humanitarian partners in the country.

The National Coordination Assistant will support coordination of the implementation of humanitarian activities by working together with relevant staff  OCHA and will support implementation and monitoring of the humanitarian activities and will be a key player in promoting a client-oriented approach by facilitating interactions with operational humanitarian agencies in Syria.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Coordination Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

  • Support the Organization of missions, meetings, conferences, workshops;
  • Provide support for the preparation of briefing materials and presentations;
  • Assisting the coordination unit with the oversight of communication flow within the office and with sectors, UN Agencies, NGOs;
  • Provide Secretariat services to coordination unit, draft written outputs such correspondence, Note verbal, Agenda, Minutes of meetings;
  • Maintain files (both paper and electronic) and archive key documents from the coordination unit;
  • Support the organization of high level visits and delegations as well as support field deployment;
  • Assist in the preparation of the unit work plan based on the recommendation of the Head of unit and the MoMs, and update the progress made on the work plan;
  • Support the Coordination Unit in all matters related to the delivery of activities, and reports;
  • Maintain and establish contact lists of humanitarian partners, sectors and ensure circulation within the unit, other sections and humanitarian counterparts;
  • Any other duties as determined by the Coordination Unit;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • High school degree, BA degree in political or social science, public administration, law,
  • Development studies, international affairs or other relevant disciplines would be an advantage.

Experience:

  • 5 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in management of natural disasters, humanitarian emergencies, emergency preparedness, crisis/ emergency relief management, rehabilitation and development;
  • Experience in the country and knowledge about the UN system would be an advantage.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required.
