Background

The Regional Gender Team, based in the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH), supports UNDP Country Offices in the Europe and Central Asia region with a range of advisory services to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. These include the design and development of programmes and strategic initiatives, promoting engagement with women’s organizations and other civil society partners, and strengthening innovative approaches, peer learning and strategic partnerships within and outside the region. It also supports the design and implementation of regional and sub-regional initiatives to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment and meet the objectives of the UNDP global Gender Equality Strategy (2014-2017).  

A key area of work is to track and document the results achieved by UNDP programmes and initiatives in the region in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, and ensure their dissemination on the relevant pages on the UNDP website, internal learning platforms, social media and other channels. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will work closely with the programme specialist in the Regional Gender Team under the overall supervision of the Regional Team Leader

Research, documentation and knowledge management:

  • Conduct desk reviews of UNDP programmes and strategies to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, contact Country Offices as needed, and help to develop UNDP communications products such as Fast Facts and Results;
  • Assist in the preparation of other written materials, such as newsletters, backgrounders and meeting minutes;  
  • Track and help keep the Gender Team abreast of current political and social trends that affect gender equality in the countries of the region;
  • Assist in the review of country and regional documents to strengthen their gender dimension. 

Website update:

  • Update the content of the UNDP regional Hub web pages on gender equality and women’s empowerment; 
  • Other activities;
  • Assist in preparations for meetings and dialogue events;
  • Provide general support to the work of the Gender Team.

Competencies

  • Self-starter, with ability to multi-task and work to deadlines;
  • Excellent relationship management and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Strong communications skills, especially in various forms of online communications and social media;
  • Attention to details.

 

Required Skills and Experience

Academic Qualifications/ Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate–level degree programme (master’s or higher degree) in gender studies, human rights, international relations, social sciences, ethnology, public policy or related disciplines. 

Experience:

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of gender equality and women’s empowerment  development programming is an advantage;
  • Demonstrated interest in women’s empowerment and gender equality;
  • Excellent computer literacy (Word, Excel, ppt).

Language skills:

  • Proficiency in English, with excellent writing, research and analytical skills is a must. 

Conditions: 

The intern will work full-time at the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub for a period of four to six months, starting in March.
UNDP internships are non-paid and travel expenses are not covered. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc
Available for working in the UNDP for a period of 4-6 months (Applicants available for six months are preferred. Applicants must state their availability).

Subsequent Employment: 

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 
Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.
