The Communications Section enhances communications about the value of volunteerism for peace and development and the contributions of UNV and UN Volunteers.  It focuses on clear and effective messaging to increase the visibility and impact of UNV. The Section documents the status of volunteerism and its contribution to development and peace, raises awareness among UNV stakeholders and encourages support of volunteerism, including observation of International Volunteer Day (IVD) and other UN international days. The team produces and promotes tools (websites, publications, social media content, campaigns, videos, etc.) for corporate identity and to highlight UNV’s support to volunteerism worldwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief, Communications Section, the Communications Specialist leads all online communications for UNV. The Communications Specialist supports the implementation of the UNV Corporate Communications Strategy and its deliverables based on the corporate Strategic Framework – including a content strategy approach that focusses on innovation in digital brand and marketing for the organization. The Communications Specialist, supported by the Communications team, takes the overall responsibility of the editorial quality of all content and maintenance of online tools. The Communications Specialist also manages content for all communications deliverables, online and offline, for sharing with internal and external stakeholders and in managing clients and vendors.

The Communications Specialist works in close collaboration with the ICT Section, Portfolio teams and other sections at UNV HQ and with the Field Units.

The Communications Specialist supervises, as first reporting officer, the Communications Associate and consultants and acts as Deputy of the Section in supporting the Chief in strategic corporate communications and Section management.

Specific duties include the following:

Design, manage and implement online communications:

  • Develops, in consultation with the Chief, Communications Section, an annual work plan for communication activities aligned with the corporate communication strategy, executes and manages activities to enhance the strategic position of UNV through effective digital communications and information outreach;
  • Leads and implements a relevant content strategy for most efficient multi-purposing communications content – including lead on relevant and geographically mixed visuals/ video and innovation in online content;
  • Supports the implementation of the corporate communication strategy, along with any projects of the Communications Section, and serve as Deputy of Section when needed.

Develop and manage multipurpose communication and content strategy:

  • Leads the implementation of the UNV Communications Strategy towards making the UNV online presence, along with other modern communications tools, results oriented pathways to achieving success for UNV in its strategic priorities;
  • Leads the design and implementation of a corporate social-media strategy;
  • Ensures consistency of web publishing plans with the corporate communications strategy;
  • Oversees the content production and maintenance of the corporate websites, and of all communications content, ensuring high editorial quality;
  • Implements the redesign and relaunch of www.unv.org project, along with consistent branding and a one-entry point concept for all other websites of the organization, web content across the organization and social media;
  • Manages the review and approval of all online content, guided by the UNV programme priorities;
  • Supervises editing and review of content for posting on corporate websites and social media; including the campaign website www.volunteeractioncounts.org when needed;
  • Keeps abreast of news and trends in the global volunteer community and develop appropriate editorial plans for all content;
  • Brings digital innovation ideas into the organization;
  • Coordinates with colleagues within UNV and partner organizations to ensure production and timely publication of all digital content in the three official UNV languages (English, French and Spanish);
  • Develops and implements online information design plans (i.e. new content development, display, classification and navigation), overseeing the production of graphic and interactive components for optimal presentation;
  • Supervises collection of information from internal clients, while also working with them to identify and support their communication needs into yearly and quarterly communications plans, editorial calendar and service plan.

Develop editorial strategies and concepts:

  • Ensures consistency in messaging and branding in all communications tools,  aligned with the corporate communications strategy;
  • Guides and manages external Communications content developers and consultants;
  • Guides Field Units with branding and content advice, resources, editorial support and feedback;
  • Manages editorial design development and develops procedures for editorial processes, online, visual, video and print;
  • Manages the technical implementation, quarterly reporting, statistical review and analysis, and content development of all communications online products.

Develop and coordinate partnerships:

  • Reviews and identifies potential partner organizations and engage in advocacy of volunteerism for peace and development through communication tools;
  • Develops strategic alliances with other UN agencies for establishing cross-UN synergies in communications;
  • Supports the Chief, Communications Section on the development of partnerships for prize and recognition events on volunteering.

Manage online marketing, outreach and campaigns:

  • Oversees the online promotion of special events and global campaigns including  within projects;
  • Develops and leads an innovative communications marketing roadmap for the organization, including outreach initiatives;
  • Oversees statistical analysis of web usage and adapt editorial and outreach priorities accordingly;
  • Leads the development and implementation of editorial plans for all UNV content - guided by the UNV programme priorities;
  • Supports outreach initiatives to raise visibility and media interest in the work of UNV and the contributions made by UN Volunteers.

Ensure capacity and resource management:

  • Manages outsourced services and relations with internal and external consultants for deliverables of the Communications Section;
  • Creates yearly plans for capacity, resources and technical requirements for the Communications Section, devises yearly and project-based projects/plans and recommend resourcing when required;
  • Manages writers/editors and technical colleagues (internal and external) contributing to content, providing guidance and/or exchanging ideas and strategy.

Management:

  • Provides direction and leadership to the Communications Associate and consultants to engender collaborative, innovative and results-based teamwork; ensures close cooperation with the Volunteer Programming and Management Group for targeted programme-driven communications;
  • Manages and supervises, as first reporting officer, and in close coordination with the Chief, Communications Section the Section staff and consultants to achieve the outputs and quality assurance of all activities; establishing work plans, required resources, priorities, timelines and performance benchmarks. Monitors progress, and takes timely action and/or decisions to ensure objectives are met;
  • Acts as Deputy to Chief, Communications Section in all matters concerning management of the Section;
  • Other related duties that may be assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism or relevant subject area.

Experience:

  • 7 years relevant experience in online communications, with progressively increasing responsibilities;
  • Must have experience in managing multi-lingual web sites and online communications targeted at international audiences, including on-going content planning;
  • Proven experience in managing projects of designing and relaunching digital assets (websites, social media, and digital campaigns);
  • Significant experience in English language drafting and editing for online publications, along with management of communications teams for projects;
  • Experience in managing Online Communications projects and teams a must.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required; and
  • Other UN language is an asset.
