Background

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) leads and supports the organization in cultivating, building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for advancing and successfully achieving the mission of UNDP. Within BERA, the Communications Group leads and manages external communications through strategy, media, digital communications, marketing, branding and global storytelling. The Online & Digital team within the Communications Group is responsible for implementing a comprehensive digital strategy, including UNDP’s multi-lingual corporate web site in four languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic) and Country Office sites and partner sites; and all aspects of digital media channels with cutting-edge multi-media and social media approaches, products, services, and platforms, including increased attention to mobile platforms.

The Digital Editor (Arabic) is part of the Online & Digital Communications team. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Manager, Digital and Online Communications, he/she will contribute to the implementation of UNDP’s corporate digital strategy, developing and maintaining the UNDP Arabic website and Arabic social media on a daily basis but also ensuring that UNDP’s digital presence can significantly be enhanced over time. He/she will oversee Arabic versions of the global site and contribute to the English site, and author, edit and present content for global audiences.  He/she will also provide ongoing guidance and support to UNDP units in relevant countries and offices regarding best practices in digital media and content management.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance and improvement of Arabic and English global web site:

  • Maintain www.undp.org with written material and multimedia from HQ, regional centers and country offices. Liaise with the rest of the team on whether and how material should be presented on the other language sections of the UNDP corporate website;
  • Edit and publish online content in Arabic and English that is clear, concise, vivid, and conveys key messages to target audiences on the Web. Ensure that all content is timely, accurate and compelling;
  • Enhance navigation, structure and content across www.undp.org,  liaising with the rest of the team to ensure consistency across languages;
  • Support a wide series of multimedia products including photo galleries, videos and infographic materials in Arabic and English; and
  • Liaise with the rest of the Communications Group to determine how specific events should be covered and marketed on the Web in all languages.  

Maintenance and improvement of Arabic social media channels:

  • Research, expand and monitor UNDP’s presence on social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr and Youtube;
  • Research additional online marketing tools and provide recommendations to enhance UNDP’s visibility;
  • Coach and assist UNDP staff worldwide on best practices around social media outreach; and
  • Champion social media efforts throughout the organization.

Provides digital communications support for HQ units; regional centres and country offices, focusing on:

  • Provide guidance and feedback for UNDP’s communications staff in the Country Offices, helping them to comply with UNDP’s requirements for Country Office websites;
  • Assist all HQ units and regional bureaus to consolidate their presence on the Web while staying in tune with the organization’s branding and identity;
  • Help all other specialized units to develop the most appropriate strategies for a wide variety of project-specific sites; and
  • Review content submitted by other HQ units.

Contributes to implementation of the digital strategy using a data-driven approach:

  • Contribute to the implementation of UNDP’s corporate strategy for digital, making sure that the organization complies with the best practices of content, usability, design;  
  • Support the expansion of digital analytics to understand impact and synthesize reports to improve and redirect work as needed; and
  • Coach and guide other units in the use of digital analytics to support decision-making.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, English, Arabic, Liberal Arts, international relations or related fields;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in media, communications or advocacy;
  • Experience in the usage of content management systems and social media required;
  • Demonstrated track record of outstanding, accessible writing and editing work in Arabic for public communications, marketing, journalism or related field required;
  • Previous experience with a multilateral or international organization is helpful but not mandatory, but a proven ability to learn new content and competencies quickly is required.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in Arabic and English is required.
