UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality developed by UN Women to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women´s rights. The campaign encourages them to speak out and take action against inequalities faced by women and girls. UN Women envisions the implementation of a tailored Regional Campaign based on the UN Women global HeForShe campaign.

Under the supervision of the Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean and working in full cooperation with relevant staff from the Regional Office and country offices – including an international consultant in charge of the development of the Regional Campaign Strategy, the Campaign Coordinator will support the development and implementation of the high impact communications (broadcast, news, on-line media, social media in all its expressions, live regional launch event) strategy that will capture, feature, and inspire specific actions that men and boys can undertake, as well as to serve as a tool to generate resources in support of UN Women programming on gender equality in the region. A key component of the support will be to analyze and synthesize individual country efforts, as well as to support these with an eye towards consistency with regional and global messaging. The Campaign Coordinator will also support efforts to contract pro bono services to develop messages for broadcast that are linked to social media and to the main goals of the campaign.

The campaign in the Americas and Caribbean region will provide opportunities for a younger generation of activists as well as constituencies already invested in the process to become involved. It will work with the media, social media, universities and other partner to help reach the target audience. It will also attract high profile partners to assist in spreading its messages, to inspire and model specific actions, and to contribute financial and in-kind contributions.

The Campaign Coordinator has primary responsibility for implementing the day-to-day aspects of a multifaceted HeForShe regional campaign that includes TV, radio, events, social media and others to be defined. The Campaign Coordinator will oversee all aspects of the campaign including implementation of the campaign strategy and work plan, coordinating with public relations and events consultants and service providers, and contributing to fundraising operations. The Campaign Coordinator will also be responsible for managing the campaign budget. This role requires a candidate comfortable with managing tactical day to day campaign deliverables.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean the Campaign Coordinator will undertake the following tasks:

  • Liaise with country offices to map and support their efforts - including an assessment of their needed tools;
  • Coordinate with UN Women offices in the region to ensure a united look and approach - brand standardization - and to maximize linkages between offices to overall regional efforts; and to encourage sharing of promising practices, and to mitigate risk
  • Produce select standardized tools for use throughout the region
  • Create campaign production schedules and monitor their implementation, making adjustments as directed;
  • Coordinate and edit content for blogs, promotional materials, website copy, articles; as well as composing Twitter posts and Facebook updates;
  • Ensure the flow of updated content on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter;
  • Act as early warning focal point for country level and other colleagues to ensure management is briefed to avert risks or respond through early action as needs arise;
  • Facilitate conversations, provide information, and ensure positive tone through social media platforms;
  • Manage logistics - including arrangements for participants, locations, audio-visual, travel,  and media for the major regional launch in Mexico;
  • Act as a liaison to coordinate partner inputs and to ensure timely follow-up regarding questions and requests;
  • Coordinate with major media and press outlets to ensure maximum coverage of the Campaign and associated events;
  • Coordinate with high-profile individuals, including in government and private sector, for participation in launch, and other events;
  • Coordinate with associated service providers, including pro-bono and contractual arrangements;
  • Provide analysis of social and other media to assess the on-going impact and reach of the Campaign
  • Continuously monitor the HeForShe Campaign´s key performance indicators and provide a monthly status report - including based on aggregate results from countries in the region.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Required Skills and Experience

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelors degree in the field of International Relations, Public relations, or communications related field.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years professional experience in public relations field (government and/or private sector);
  • Demonstrated experience in campaign management and/or event planning;
  • Specific experience in corporate or other public relations/ advertising using social media;
  • Experience with news or broadcast media considered an asset;
  • Previous volunteer experience considered an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Proficient in written and spoken English and Spanish;
  • Portuguese or French considered an asset.
