Background

The creation of UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The UNV will have to follow the guidelines of UN Women and will be in contact with various organizations of civil society and also with members of the steering committee of the program, including the European Union, public institutions and other agencies of the UN system.

In response to the need to strengthening civil society organizations and the dialogue on women´s rights with public institutions, UN Women and the European Union have launched the program Strengthening Civil Society Organizations to Promote Gender Equality in Chile. This program aims to contribute capacity building and advocacy mechanisms of civil society in legislative processes and the formulation of public policies that promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The program provides funding for civil society projects, aimed at promoting the rights of Chilean women in three priority areas: the elimination of gender violence, economic empowerment of women, and leadership and political participation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Provides a high level of coordination and organizational support to the Programme Manager.
  • Undertakes and supports strategic planning and programming on gender initiatives including technical and coordination support to civil society organizations to promote gender equality.
  • Supports the organization of events and dialogues with civil society organizations and public institutions.
  • Follow-up on projects led by civil society organizations as well as support the achievement of its objectives and compliance with financial and administrative requirements.
  • Visits organizations and conduct field missions as necessary.
  • Manages the logistics of and coordinates content development for meetings, conferences, trainings, and other project-related events.
  • Communicates with project partners and stakeholders for project activities to optimize access and to ensure timely organization and facilitation of activities related to project implementation.
  • Designs and develops databases to support project activities
  • Follow-up with the implementing partners on progress report, submission of reports and recent data on target group and other information material.
  • Assists with design, development and dissemination of project products and reports.
  • Assists in project and event planning and implementation, budget preparation for different activities as required.
  • Assists in coordination and monitoring of project activities and budgets.
  • Under the guidance of the Programme Manager, participates in different forums and meetings on gender issues, including initiatives under the UN interagency thematic group on gender and human rights.

Results/Expected Output:

  • Events are organized according to the targets and goals of the programme.
  • Progress reports of UN Women implementing partners are monitored and delivered according to Data bases are created.
  • Implementing partners project products and reports are disseminated.
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Furthermore, UN Volunteer s are encouraged to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Minimum of Bachelor degree in the field of Social Sciences, Communication, Journalism or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience in at national/international level.
  • Experience in managing multi-stakeholder projects, budgeting and resource planning would be an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in Spanish (both written and oral) is required;
  • English is required at intermediate level.

Living Conditions:

  • This assignment is placed at the UNDP offices premises in Santiago, Capitol of the Republic of Chile. Climate ranges between -2° to 39° Celsius degrees. Rains sometimes during the winter. As in all large cities of the world, many crimes can affect people, especially visitors. The most common crimes in Santiago are street muggings and thefts which most commonly occur in places of greatest concentration such as hotels, airports, restaurants, currency exchange houses and automatic cashiers, especially in downtown Santiago. There are also increasing incidences of residential break-ins of empty houses and car theft from public places with little vigilance. Road travel along the main thoroughfares and highways around the country are generally safe at any hour but anyway, when travelling by road in personal vehicles, is advised you conduct them during daylight hours and after taking appropriate rest. Damage caused by the 2010 earthquake to highways and roads has been already repaired. The hotel infrastructure is operating normally.

UNV Conditions of Service:

  • A 12 months contract; monthly volunteer living allowance (VLA) intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, CLP 764.694 according to the pro-forma cost for National UNV; settling-in-grant (if applicable); life, health, and permanent disability insurance; return airfares (if applicable); resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
