The Communications Section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support the Web Editor. The intern will assist with writing, editing, proofreading and posting content on the UN Women website and related platforms.

Under the supervision of the Web editor, the intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Writing or editing content for the UN Women website;
  • Keeping abreast of relevant news and UN Women activities or programmes in the field, suggesting topics for news or feature story coverage;
  • Attending events and writing news or feature stories for the website;
  • Assisting with proofreading, editing, and writing blurbs as needed;
  • Web production on the UN Women and/or the Beijing+20 campaign website;
  • Using UN Women’s content management system (Sitecore), the intern will post content, including photos and other media, on both websites, as well as cross-posting web content on other fora;
  • Update an inventory of www.unwomen.org news and feature story content;
  • During the General Assembly in September 2015 and for other key events, support editorial/web production;
  • Other tasks as requested by the Communications Team.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in either Journalism or Communications;
  • Students in the final year of a Bachelor’s programme or recent graduates (maximum one year after graduation) may also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with, or pursuing, a Master’s or advanced university degree programme in any field.

Experience:

  • Experience working in either journalism or institutional communications and experience with web publishing;
  • Proficiency in using new technologies, content management systems and web-based platforms. Knowledge of HTML, other scripts and web design are a plus;
  • Attention to detail, precision and caution when posting content on public fora.

Language:

  • Fluency in English. French is highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates also fluent in French and/or Spanish;
  • Familiarity with women’s rights issues or international development/relations;
  • Strong writing and editing skills, attention to spelling and ability to follow style guides.

Deadline for applications is 22 April 2015. Short-listed candidates will be contacted for interviews the last week of April. A decision is expected by 1 May.

Start Date is flexible: July, August or September 2015 – but must be available until the end of December 2015.

  • Full duration of internship: 4-6 months (preference will be given to interns available for 6 months).

Once the candidate has been selected, the following additional documents will need to be submitted:

  • Letter of enrolment from school;
  • Scanned visa document/scanned passport document if no visa is required;
  • Scanned medical insurance document.

Conditions:

  • UN Women will not pay for the internship; all the expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern.
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship; The Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;
  • The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of my internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof;
  • The Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Permited to work in the United States of America.
