Background

The position is based in the Country Office of the United Nations Office for Resident Coordinator (UNRCO) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The main instrument for information management at the UNRCO is the Information Management Unit (IMU), which provides support to UN Country Team (UNCT) and humanitarian and development partners in terms of geo-information support, information co-ordination and dissemination. The IMU produces GIS maps and other graphic presentations, using primary and secondary data on various themes. It also coordinates data collection and data processing; provides data services and information management advice and mapping services to UNCT and partners; and supports the dissemination of the information to the wider development and humanitarian community. These products include inter alia: situation maps for security incidents; operational space mapping; mapping of floods/landslides; maps to support disaster preparedness activities; humanitarian snapshots; tracking of protest programs; and support to the UN Department of Safety and Security mapping needs.

Under the direct supervision of RCO Coordination Analyst and overall supervision of the Head of the UNRCO, the Information Management Assistant will support the UNRCO as well as the UNRCO Field Coordination Offices in their information management needs. S/he will be responsible for maintaining, updating and developing information related to the IMU. The Information Management Assistant works in close collaboration with the team members from other units of the UNRCO and specifically support the IM/GIS Officer to produce geo-referenced data analysis and mapping.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.  Support office in collecting and ensuring information is up-to-date;

  • Collect and maintain Nepal Information Platform with relevant and up-to-date information;
  • Support in maintaining incidents and other databases as necessary;
  • Assist in the preparation of meeting minutes, presentations, working papers and tables for briefing and review sessions;
  • Produce various information products as required;
  • Supports RCO in preparing annual reports, work plans, financial expenditure reports etc.

2.  Support office in networking with partners;

  • Develop and maintain the network of partners  to gather, maintain and produce wide range of information products;
  • Facilitate the meetings with partners relating to Web Taskforce Meeting annually, any other related activities.
  • Support UNDAF data needs through providing data using and mapping from UNCT group.

3.  Assist in design, develop and maintain databases;

  • Assists GIS/IM Officer in designing and developing database management systems, monitoring tools and data collection tools/templates
  • Maintain various databases such as Who is Doing What Where(4W), Operational Space, Security Incidents, Disaster Database, Daily Reports as required; and
  • Promote Data Readiness and Common Data Repository.

4.  Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing;

  • Organize training for UNCT Communication Focal Person and RCO staff in Nepal Information Platform, when required;
  • Conduct Database and Nepal Information Platform training to UNV and Interns;
  • Assist in Identification of sources of information and trends related to UN coordination including identification of knowledge networks and communities of practice.

5.  Any other activity as reasonably requested by the supervisor;

  • Undertake other duties that may be required by the Head of Office, the GIS/IM Officer or UN Coordination Analyst; and
  • Participate to field mission and act as translator, whenever necessary.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:    

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology/Computer Sciences or relevant field.

Experience & Skills:    

  • Minimum of 3  years work experience in relevant field;
  • Strong computer skills – basic web design and database management, experience of GIS software would be an advantage.
  • Strong command of Microsoft package, particularly Excel
  • Previous experience in IM in a UN context will be an advantage

Language Requirements:

  • Proven communication skills in written and spoken in English and Nepali.
